Volleyball Comes Up Short Against Crosstown Rivals

Oct. 13, 2015 - A busy week of three conference matches began this evening for the Cougars as they made the short journey down Division Street to take on Dominican University. Concordia-Chicago started out slowly and improved as the night progressed, but that did not deny the Stars a three-set victory (25-13, 25-17, 25-19).

Dominican shot out of the starting gates and took a 13-1 lead.  Trailing 21-6 late in the set, the Cougars got their first burst of mometum as three kills by Austin Thompson (Morris, Il/Morris Community) and two aces by Nicoletta Crowley (Romeoville, IL/H.S.) added up to a 5-0 run. However, the run halted there as the Stars closed out the opening set.

In set two, CUC retained a bit of the momentum as they battled the hosts to a 6-6 tie in the early moments. However, Dominican dished out a 10-0 run at that point to put CUC back on its heels. Concordia-Chicago kept fighting and clawed back to 21-16 on an ace by Emily Marcus (Chesterton, IN/H.S.). Once again, though, the rally by CUC ended prematurely and they found themselves in an 0-2 hole for the match.

Set three also saw the Stars jump out early, but the Cougars still would not give up. Trailing 16-12, they hit Dominican for a 5-0 run capped off by Mary Arredia's (Franklin Park, IL/West Leyden) kill for their first lead since the early moments of set two. The Stars regroupled one last time though and scored nine of the final 11 points to wrap up the three-set victory.

Thompson recorded 10 kills and a .276 attack, but the team as a whole finished with the same number of hitting errors as kills. Dominican hit .263 with 41 kills, led by Rosalyn Wyse with 11 kills and Kendyl Todd with 10.

"I thought we came into this match a little in awe of Dominican, especially after last year's match," said CUC head coach Troy Campbell. "I thought we had a better push tonight however and that we represented ourselves much better. We had some good stretches of play tonight, but we have to do a better job of putting some balls away and playing more consistently if we're going to beat some of the top teams in the conference."

Concordia-Chicago (8-12, 3-3 NACC) will play two matches at home this weekend in Lakeland College on Friday night at 7:00 and Marian University on Saturday morning at 9:30.
