Box Score Sept. 7, 2014 – Concordia University Chicago's women's soccer team played its second home game this season on a warm late summer day in front of a vocal crowd of nearly 200 fans! The CUC fans had a memorable day as they saw an 8-0 whitewashing of MacMurray College. Concordia-Chicago's win made for the program's first 4-0 start in school history.
"Our emphasis after our midweek game (versus Beloit College) was to move the ball quickly and integrate players on the field," said CUC head coach
Thomas Goines. "We were able to move the ball in fits and starts, but the consistency we are looking for remains elusive. Now we have a week to improve before traveling to a very tough opponent in Illinois College."
The goalkeeper play that earned the goose egg included sophomore
Kim Bower (Island Lake, IL/Wauconda) in her first career start.
Ally Krajnak (Griffith, IN/H.S.) played the second half of the game and recorded her first collegiate action. Little glove work was necessary as they recorded the team's third shutout (second combined) of the season.
The first Cougars' chance on goal came just 26 seconds into the game. At the 1:59 mark, the Cougars connected on a flowing play as
Sarah LaCost (Mount Prospect, IL/Prospect) scored the first goal of the game and of her hat trick.
Alisha Johnson (Coal City, IL/H.S.) and
Alex Wilson (Round Lake, IL/Grayslake Central) were both credited on the assist.
The offense sputtered till the 14-minute mark when Johnson took it upon herself to make it 2-0 Cougars. Five minutes later, Johnson was again the catalyst as she created another chance down the right wing and found LaCost lurking for her second goal.
Shawna Rembold (Rochester, MI/Stoney Creek) came in for Johnson and two minutes later got free down the right flank. Rembold's shot went off the crossbar, but LaCost was there to bury the rebound for her hat trick and a 4-0 CUC lead.
A pass from
Liz Sanders (St Louis, MO/Parkway South) in the 24
th minute gave
Hillary Campbell (Dyer, IN/Lake Central) an opportunity to score that she did not turn down. The final score of the first half came in the 30
th minute as Rembold found Sanders in the middle for a clinical finish.
In the second half, the Cougars had a myriad of chances and connected on two. The first was a breakaway scored by center midfielder
Gabby Garza (Fenton, MI/H.S.) where a throw-in on the right side of the field and space cleared by a crossing run from
Allison Kruk (Elgin, IL/St Edward) opened up space for her run. Campbell held up play, turned and played Garza into the clear, and she finished smartly past the onrushing goalkeeper. Seven minutes later, Kruk and Campbell combined on an assist to freshman
Lauren Chorowicz (Kohler, WI/Sheboygan Lutheran), which was the first goal of her career.
The Cougars will return to action on Saturday at Illinois College in downstate Jacksonville.
