Box Score Sept. 14, 2014 – The Concordia University Chicago men's soccer team had a short turnaround as they hosted Franklin College from Indiana less than 24 hours after finishing an overtime game on Saturday. The Cougars showed tired legs in a competitive match outside of a five-minute spell in the second half that cost them both goals in a 2-0 loss.
"It was a good match for us. It is important for us to learn to play against high pressure and skillful teams as we go into conference where we will face these types of teams," said head coach
Micah Middendorf." Overall, we played well and created a number of chances. The two goals that were scored on us were teachable moments and we will put it behind us and prepare for our game on Thursday against Maranatha."
In the first half, Franklin College showed good defensive organization and controlled the run of play, which led to an 11-3 shot advantage for the Grizzlies. Two of those chances for the Cougars came in the 20
th minute as
DeAndre McLaurin (Joliet, IL/Joliet West) had his first shot thwarted by the Grizzlies' keeper from inside the goal. The rebound then caromed off the post. The score at the half remained 0-0 as the Cougars' stout defending, along with alert goal keeping by
Jorge Guzman (Cicero, IL/Morton East), Â held firm.
In the second half, the Cougars came out and had the better of play shown by reversing the shot advantage from the first half and outshooting the Grizzlies 9-5. Unfortunately for the Cougars, the two quality chances by Franklin College were put away in the 53rd and 56th minutes for the two-goal margin.
A number of Cougars played well including
Fabian Robles (Cicero, IL/St. Joseph) played well and had big minutes at important periods in the game. In the 70
th minute, the Cougars had another good sequence with three consecutive shots that somehow did not score. McLaurin had the initial shot, followed by
Manny Valdez (Cicero, IL/St. Joseph), and then Robles. In the 80
th and 87
th minutes, CUC had additional opportunities as McLaurin and Valdez each had headers that did not find the target.
The Cougars will host Edgewood College on Saturday, Sept. 20 at 1:15 p.m. The game will be played across the street from the CUC campus at The Priory Field (corner of Division and Harlem).
