Box Score Oct. 4, 2014 – The Concordia-Chicago men's soccer team traveled to Marian University on Saturday. It was a dreary wet afternoon in Fond du Lac, WI as a hard-fought overtime game ended in a controversial 3-2 Marian victory.
"I am very proud of the way my guys fought in this game," said head coach
Micah Middendorf. "We did enough to win the game, but it was not to be. We will return to the practice field and work to improve our skills."
It was a tightly contested game all afternoon as the first half saw both teams score. The Sabres scored in the 14
th minute, but the Cougars responded in the 29
th.
DeAndre McLaurin (Joliet, IL/Joliet West) scored his seventh of the season on a thru ball from
Brendan Mullane (Park Ridge, IL/Maine South) to even the match.
Just two minutes into the second half,
Ricardo Aragon (Cicero, IL/Morton East) scored his second goal in as many games on an assist from
Daniel Krajewski (Addison, IL/Addison Trail) off a set piece to put the Cougars in the lead.
In the 73
rd minute, Marian tied the game. Neither team was able to end the game in regulation. It was a closely contested game throughout with Marian having a 20-17 shot advantage.
In the overtime period, both teams had chances in a back-and-forth affair. Late in the second overtime period, a foul was called on the sideline. However, the free kick inexplicably was taken from the middle of the field, sparking a scoring chance for the Sabres as the Cougars were waiting for the ball to be placed where it belonged. Marian scored with nine seconds remaining to end the match.
The Cougars next game is a non-conference affair under the lights at North Central College in Naperville on Wednesday. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00.
