Box Score Oct. 21, 2014 – The Division Street Rivalry came to the Concordia-Chicago soccer field as the Cougar men hosted Dominican University on a windy and chilly Tuesday afternoon. The NACC-leading Stars eclipsed the Cougars in two overtimes to take the game 1-0.
The Cougars relied on the outstanding play of
Jorge Guzman (Cicero, IL/Morton East) to keep them in the game. Despite being outshot 32-2, with 18 shots to 1 on target, and an 8-1 corner kick deficit, Guzman had 17 clutch saves as they forced overtime against the perennial conference leaders.
In the 64
th minute, the Cougars were able to get forward through junior forward
Joey Malme (Green Bay, WI/NEW Lutheran)Â but had a goal disallowed due to an offside flag right in front of the net. Dominican also had a goal disallowed in regulation.
Ninety minutes were not enough between the two Division street rivals as CUC held fast. However, in the second overtime ,a free kick from the right side of the field unlocked the Cougar defense and the Stars' Ryan Ybarra headed it home back post for the golden goal winner.
"I am very proud of my guys for the way they defended for 90-plus minutes today," said Head Coach Micah Middendorf. "This game shows that we can compete with the top teams in the NACC. We just need to put in this focus every game and be consistent with our effort throughout the season."
The Cougars' (6-7-2, 3-5-0 NACC) next game is at Concordia University Wisconsin on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
