Cougars Downed by Eagles

Oct. 11, 2014 – Following a close five-set win in Friday night's away match at Wisconsin Lutheran College, the Concordia-Chicago volleyball team returned home on Saturday to host Edgewood College on Homecoming. However, the Eagles spoiled the party in front of a raucous Cougar crowd with a three set victory (25-20, 25-15, 25-15).

"The key to the game was serve receiving, and we did well in the first set just like we did last night," said CUC head coach Troy Campbell. In the last two sets we were undisciplined in our defense. Offensively, we were not able to spread the ball because our ball control limited us in what we were able to do. Our back row attacks were good, but by the third set we ran out of gas a little bit."

The Cougars got off to a quick start in the first set as they took a 7-5 lead on consecutive kills by Olivia Friedrichs (San Diego, CA/Clairemont). CUC fell behind in the middle of the set, but rallied at the end as Friedrichs and Jackie Bartnicki (Chicago, IL/Guerin Prep) led the charge which ultimately fell short.

In set two, the Cougars were tied at 10 apiece and close at 12-14 before the Eagles pulled away. The pattern repeated itself in the third set as the Cougars were also at 12-14 before falling by the identical margin.

Edgewood finished the match with 38 kills and a .326 attack percentage. Concordia (5-17, 2-4 NACC) was led by Kaylyn Anderson's (East Chicago, IN/Whiting) nine kills, Friedrich's eight kills, and Bartnicki's 22 assists. Bartnicki was cited for her gutsy play as she had been stricken with a flu bug and still gutted out the last two days for the team.

The Cougars' next match is on the road at Dominican University on Tuesday in the next iteration of the Division Street Rivalry. Their next home game is on October 22 hosting Aurora University.
