Sept. 25, 2013 - A three-goal first half was too much for the Concordia-Chicago men's soccer team to overcome this afternoon as they lost to Aurora University 3-1 at AU's Vago Field.
"I thought we did some good things on the field today, but we were burned a couple of times off of their set pieces. We have to be much better at defending those," said CUC head coach Micah Middendorf.
The Cougars' Brendan Mullane (Park Ridge, IL/Maine South) had the first good scoring chance of the gane, but his shot was turned aside by AU keeper Zach Richter. The Spartans then came up with the initial score of the game on Anthony Parra's 26th-minute goal.
Before the half was over, Aurora increased its lead thanks to two of the set pieces mentioned by Middendorf. Headers by Corey Novotny in the 36th minute and Jon Palomar in the 40th minute found the net for a 3-0 lead.
Concordia got on the board three minutes into the second half.
Dylan Pavlisin (Villa Park, CA/Orange Lutheran) scored his second of the year, heading home a cross from
Taylor Nehmer (Milwaukee, WI/Milwaukee Lutheran) to cut the deficit to two goals.
Following the goal, the Cougars earned a couple of corner kicks but were unable to capitalize on them. The Spartans then added the final tally in the 64th minute on Patrick Reis' goal.
Aurora finished with a 22-6 advantage in shots. Cougars' keeper Roberto Aragon (Cicero, IL/Morton East) was credited with four saves.
The Cougars (3-6-0, 0-2-0 NACC) will host the Milwaukee School of Engineering on Saturday at 1:00.
