April 7, 2013 - The Concordia Cougars played the role of guests on their own home field today due to unplayable field conditions in Sheboygan, Wisconsin where they were to play Northern Athletics Conference rival Lakeland College. But the Cougars made themselves at home as they closed out a 4-0 weekend with a 13-3, 10-2 sweep and improved to 16-3 overall, 6-2 in conference play.
Each team scored in their first at-bat in game one, Concordia's run coming on
Thomas Gier's (Fox Lake, IL/Grant Community) single that brought home
Shawn Miller (Pleasant Prairie, WI/Tremper). Concordia took control in the top of the second
. Robert Weis (Oak Creek, WI/H.S.) singled home the first of five runs in the frame, and Gier drove home two more runs with a single to rightfield to cap the rally.
Leading 7-2 in the fourth, the Cougars put the game away with three runs in each of the next two innings.
Kyle Huber's (Chicago, IL/Lane Tech) double scored two of the three runs in the fourth, and
Derek Binninger (Pleasant Prairie, WI/Tremper) doubled home two more in the fifth.
Bobby Beelen (Wheeling, IL/H.S.) earned his second win in three starts with six innings of work. The southpaw gave up three runs on four hits while striking out six.
In game two, Concordia opened the scoring with four runs in the third. Gier, who finished the day 6-9 with five RBIs, singled home the first run. Later in the inning, Weis lined to the gap in left-center to score two more runs.
Miller's sacrifice fly made it a 5-0 game in the fourth, but Lakeland made a push to get back into the game in the fifth. A walk, two errors and a single put two runs on the board and chased Concordia starter
Ryan Thorsen (Lake Villa, IL/Grant Community). Dan Kluss (Niles, IL/Niles West) came to the rescue, retiring the final three batters and keeping the lead at 5-2.
Kluss held the Muskies in check through the end of the eighth, allowing just one hit over his four-inning stint. The Cougars pulled away over the final three innings as Miller drove in runs in the seventh and ninth. Weis and
Joe Moran (Chicago, IL/Notre Dame) also drive in runs as part of the 16-hit attack.
The Cougars will rest this week before an important conference weekend April 13-14 in which they face Dominican University at home and Aurora University on the road.
