April 24, 2013 - A six-RBI day by
Dan Lo Dolce (Northlake, IL/Walther Lutheran) helped the Concordia Cougars wash away the bad taste of Monday's losses with a 17-1 rout of visiting Carthage College. The win let the Cougars (23-5) take some momentum into an important weekend of Northern Athletics Conference play.
Sophomore
Louis Foss (Warner Robins, GA/Houston County) made the start and pitched six strong innings to earn his second win of the season. Foss was touched for the Redmen's only run in the top of the second on Steve Kraynak's leadoff double and Matt Cmiel's single. However, the righthander allowed just six hits over his six innings and issued no walks.
Concordia went to work immediately against Carthage starter Raymond Wojciechowski.
Derek Binninger (Pleasant Prairie, WI/Tremper) led off with a base hit
. Will Randerson (Combined Locks, WI/Kimberly) walked, and
Robert Weis (Oak Creek, WI/H.S.) singled to produce the Cougars' first run. LoDolce was next up, and he launched one over the fence in right-center for his first homer of the year and a 4-1 lead.
The Cougars were nowhere near done in the inning, however. After one out,
Joe Moran (Chicago, IL/Notre Dame) reached on an error and
Shawn Miller (Pleasant Prairie, WI/Tremper) singled. Both runners moved up on a wild pitch, and
Thomas Gier's (Fox Lake, IL/Grant Community) grounder to first scored Moran
. Kyle Huber (Chicago, IL/Lane Tech) walked, bringing up Binninger for the second time in the inning. The Cougar first baseman ripped a double to center for two more runs and a 7-1 lead.
Randerson drew the third walk of the inning, and Weis followed with a double down the third-base line to score Binninger. LoDolce capped the long inning with a two-run single up the middle to score Randerson and Weis for a 10-1 lead after two innings.
Concordia added a run in the fifth on a passed ball and wrapped up the win with a six-spot in the sixth. LoDolce drove in his final run on a fielder's choice, and
Jon Atkins (Kenosha, WI/Bradford) hit a two-run pinch single to highlight the inning.
J.P. Kulick (Buffalo Grove, IL/H.S.) pitched the seventh inning to close out the game. The Redmen put two runners aboard, but Kulick slipped a third strike past Mike Farias for the final out.
The Cougars will travel to Verona, Wisconsin on Saturday to take on the Edgewood College Eagles.
