Box Score Oct. 30, 2013 – The Concordia University Chicago women's soccer team traveled down Division Street to play crosstown rivals Dominican University on an overcast day in River Forest. It was a momentous day for the Cougars as they were fighting for their seeding in the Conference tournament. After 90 minutes, the Cougars came out the victors with a 1-0 scoreline that wasn't as close as it appeared.
"We are happy to pull out a result against our rivals and close out the season on a win," said CUC head coach
Thomas Goines. "As a group we responded with the energy necessary to win a rivalry game. I thought that we maintained pressure across the entire field and, in the second half, our possession was great as we closed out the game. I am happy for our seniors,
Alyssa Soulis (Grayslake, IL/Grayslake North) and
Angela Powers (Palos Heights, IL/Shepard), being able to close out the season with a win they will always remember."
From the start, the Cougars came out and pressured the Stars. Several good opportunities went begging for the Cougars including a great shot from distance by
Elise Bicek (Mokena, IL/Lincoln-Way East) that was dropping just under the bar forcing an impressive save from the Dominican keeper. In the 14
th minute,
Elizabeth Sanders (St. Louis, MO/Parkway South) broke the game open when she made a smart run through the right side of the Dominican defense and ripped a shot off the near post. The ricochet went across the goal mouth where Soulis finished into an empty net.
Concordia continued to pressure following the goal as
Nikki Anderson (Oswego, IL/H.S.) and
Natalie Weinhold (St. Peters, MO/Lutheran St. Charles) controlled the field and created several chances. Several sequences were sparked by heel flicks that befuddled the opposing defenders.
In the final 15 minutes of the half, the Stars gathered some momentum. A great save by
Callie Hasselbring (Houston, TX/Cypress Ridge) on a shot just under the crossbar turned out to be a game wining save.
In the second half, the emphasis for the Cougars was possession as a team and playing the ball to feet. They were able to improve on their first half possession and create dangerous chances for Soulis and
Alisha Johnson (Coal City, IL/H.S.). Johnson hit the post twice as the Dominican keeper thanked her lucky stars. The Cougars were able to play out the clock and record their twelfth win on the season as well as their eighth shutout. Their record of 12-2-4 in the regular season sets records for most wins, most ties, and fewest losses among other records.
"There will be a time and place to remember all the achievements of the team this season," said Goines. "Now our focus has to move towards the postseason as we prepare for any number of scenarios that could occur in the conference tournament."
As it happened, the Cougars found out a few hours later that they finished fifth in the NACC standings and will travel to fourth-seeded Marian University for Sunday's first-round conference tournament game (time to be announced). The Cougars and Sabres met in River Forest on Oct. 13 and battled to a 1-1 draw.
