Box Score Oct. 20, 2013 – Senior Day for the Concordia University Chicago women's soccer team saw them welcome Wisconsin Lutheran College to town. After the Cougars held pre-game ceremonies for their two seniors,
Alyssa Soulis (Grayslake, IL/Grayslake North H.S.) and
Angela Powers (Palos Heights, IL/Shepard), the Cougars settled in to play some solid possession soccer and defeat the Warriors by a 3-1 score.
The front line of Powers, Soulis and
Alisha Johnson (Coal City, IL/H.S.) led the charge and put the Warriors back on their heels. There were a number of near opportunities in the first 18 minutes until
Megan Albregts (Romney, IN/McCutcheon) unlocked the Wisconsin Lutheran defense with a gorgeous through ball for Johnson. Johnson took her first touch to the near post and kept the defender on her back as she ran to goal and fired a bullet to the far side netting that nicked the post and settled into the netting.
For the next 20 minutes Concordia maintained possession and worked it through the back line to stymie any hope the Warriors had of getting back into the game. There were several more good opportunities for the Cougars to score that just missed. However, in the 39
th minute,
Gabby Garza (Fenton, MI/H.S.) played a ball across the face of the defense that
Natalie Weinhold (St Peters, MO/Lutheran St Charles) turned adroitly through the defensive line and buried matter-of-factly to put the home team's lead at two. In the final minutes of the half,
Shawna Rembold (Rochester, MI/Stoney Creek) put in a tremendous effort battling a taller opponent. Her intensity almost resulted in another Cougar goal scoring opportunity.
During the second half, the Cougars had a lapse of concentration early and allowed the Warriors a chance to score in the 49
th minute. Cari Westover headed in a cross after a quick throw in. But, as she has her entire career, Soulis led the response. A mere 76 seconds later, Johnson played in a magnificent cross that Soulis finished in front of the Wisconsin Lutheran keeper to return the two goal margin to the home team.
For the remainder of the second half CUC continued to move the ball from side to side and look for channels to play the ball through the defense as they did in the first half. They maintained possession for much of the game and were able to maintain their two-goal lead up to the final horn.
CUC keeper
Callie Hasselbring (Houston, TX/Cypress Ridge) made three saves in the match to earn her tenth won if the season. WLC keeper Kate Gucinski made eight saves.
"I was proud of how the girls came out and battled on what can be an emotional day," said CUC head coach
Thomas Goines. "Alyssa and Angela have put four good years into the program and their efforts have been rewarded with a team they can be proud of as their legacy. I thought the play in the game today reflected our growth as a program and shows the potential of what is to come."
With the win, Concordia has set a new record for consecutive games unbeaten with eight. The previous record was seven in 2012. They are also unbeaten at home with one home game remaining in the season. If they manage that feat, it will also be a program first.
The win also marked the fifth time that the program has achieved 10 wins in a season, the previous times being 2003, 2005, 2011 and 2012. With three straight seasons of 10 wins, Power and Soulis are members of the winningest class in CUC women's soccer history.
Concordia (10-2-3, 4-2-2 NACC) will next play on Tuesday at Rockford University in another conference matchup.
