Warriors Explode in Second Half to Down Cougar Men

Box Score Oct. 20, 2013 – The Concordia University Chicago men's soccer team hosted Wisconsin Lutheran College in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference matchup on Sunday. The game started as a slightly chilly day and turned colder for Cougar fans as the Warriors scored all of their goals in the second half for a 4-0 victory.

The first half was a good old-fashioned battle that ended 0-0 at the half. Both teams looked to establish possession with contrasting styles. Wisconsin Lutheran played the unique 3-5-2 formation looking to possess in the midfield and with width in the middle. The Cougars played in a 3-4-3 and looked to press high up the field and possess up front. The contrasting styles made for an entertaining game in a drawn first half.

The Cougars had the two most dangerous chances in the first half as both teams battled well. In the 10th minute, DeAndre McLaurin (Joliet, IL/Joliet West) was played in behind and had the ball saved by the alert WLC net minder Jon Stewart. Later, Dylan Pavlisin (Villa Park, CA/Orange Lutheran) hit a stellar free kick from the right side in the 38th minute that floated over the keeper, bounced off the far goal post, and spun back along the goal line. Unfortunately, a Warrior defender arrived in the nick of time to clear the ball.

Optimism abounded for a continuation of the engaging play as the second half kicked off, but Wisconsin Lutheran put an end to that idea. Five minutes after halftime, the story changed as the Warriors were able to score with a header off a corner. The visitors then added a second goal just 1:07 later. That goal put the momentum unquestionably in the Warriors' favor, and they continued to roll with goals in the 67th and 86th minutes.

Goalkeeper Roberto Aragon (Cicero, IL/Morton East) had seven saves for the Cougars. Stewart protected his shutout with five saves for the Warriors.

The Cougars will play at Dominican University on Wednesday at 3:00.
