Box Score Oct. 12, 2013 – Concordia University Chicago men's soccer team traveled to Lakeland on Saturday to continue their Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference season. The two teams were forced to wait out a lightning delay with heavy rain at the onset of the match, but eventually the Muskies prevailed in the soggy conditions by a 2-0 final score.
The wet field changed the style of play for both teams as the ball skipped around the field and over players' feet. It took some time for the game to settle down, but Lakeland eventually took control. The Muskies were able to finish a corner kick in the 26th minute for the first goal of the game.
Lakeland continued to put pressure on the rest of the half and were able to gain some distance in the 43
rd minute as a through ball unlocked the Cougars' defense and the resulting break away was slotted home just before the half time break.
The second half was a midfield slog while possession was not established by either team. Both teams created chances, unfortunately, the Cougars were not able to put away their chances and close the gap. The best chances came on
Brendan Mullane's (Park Ridge, IL/Maine South) shot which was saved by the keeper and a header by
Daniel Ortiz (Cicero, IL/Morton East) which went wide.
Goalkeeper
Roberto Aragon (Cicero, IL/Morton East) had 11 saves in the match. The Marian keeper was credited with four saves.
The Cougars will be home on Tuesday hosting Benedictine University. Kickoff at Concordia Stadium is set for 3 p.m.
