Box Score Oct. 12, 2013 - A series of first-half turnovers proved too much for the Concordia Cougars to overcome in this afternoon's Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference game against Wisconsin Lutheran College. The Warriors put up 21 unanswered points in the second quarter and rolled to a 49-13 win over the Cougars.
The game took its first odd turn midway through the first quarter when an unexpected lightning storm stopped the game for an hour. When the game resumed,
Addison Duma-Kenny (Tavernier, FL/Coral Shores) came up with the Cougars' first of five interceptions for the day. However, a penalty and a sack stalled the Cougars' drive and brought up fourth down. A bad snap on the punt gave the ball to Wisconsin Lutheran on the Concordia 18. Two plays later, Mike Reeves ran in from the three and the Warriors had a 7-0 lead.
Late in the quarter, the Cougars put together a scoring drive.
Ryan Fischbach (South Elgin, IL/St. Charles North) completed passes to
Kevin Hagens (St. Louis, MO/Lutheranm North) for 10 yards and
Elijah Walker (Hobart, IN/H.S.) for 32 yards. On a first down from the 22, Fischbach found
Michael Brown (Modesto, CA/Johansen) on the right side, and Brown raced into the end zone. But the snap on the extra points was off, and
Nick Awrey's (Marquette, MI/Saginaw Nouvel Catholic) attempt to run the ball in was stopped short, leaving the Cougars trailing by a 7-6 score.
Interceptions by
C.J. Pasley (St. Louis, MO/Lutheran South) and
Mike Bailey (Spring Hill, FL/Central) thwarted the Warriors' next two drives as the Cougars looked to capitalize and take the lead. However, a fumble from punt formation gave the ball back to the Warriors at the three, and the home team promptly converted the miscue into points on Reeves' four-yard run for a 14-6 lead.
The hole became deeper for the Cougars as the Warriors scored on their next possession, Reeves finding the end zone for the third time on a 33-yard scamper. Later, WLC came up with an interception and turned it into seven more points on Donavin Tucker's three-yard run. Wisconsin Lutheran went to the locker room at half with a 28-6 lead.
Concordia kept the hosts off the scoreboard in the third quarter but was unable to narrow the gap despite some quality runs by
Jamaul Martin (Inkster, MI/H.S.) and
C.J. Woodford (Detroit, MI/John Glenn). Pasley's second interception of the game gave CUC another chance early in the fourth quarter, but the Warriors got the ball back on a final special teams' miscue moments later. The Warriors covered the short distance for the first points of the second half (Tucker, one-yard run) and a 35-6 lead.
Midway through the quarter, the Cougars struck quickly for their second score. Woodford took a handoff at the 50-yard line, broke through the first wave of defense and outraced the secondary for the touchdown.
Danny Colapietro's (Norridge, IL/Maine South) extra point made it a 35-13 game. However, the Cougars would get no closer as the Warriors scored twice more on pass plays of 68 and 25 yards to wrap up the scoring.
Cougar quarterbacks Fischbach and
Acusio Bivona (Los Angeles, CA/Hamilton) combined for 197 yards passing on 21 completions. Brown caught seven passes for 108 yards. On the ground, Woodford topped the 100-yard mark for the second straight week, carrying the ball 18 times for 135 yards.
Defensively,
Marcus Frazier (Chicago, IL/Evergreen Park) led Concordia with 10 tackles including five for losses totaling 22 yards. Bailey recorded nine tackles to go with his two interceptions.
Sang Lee (Tucson, AZ/Canyon Del Oro) made his first start and recorded seven tackles with a quarterback sack.
The Cougars (1-4, 1-1 NACC) return home to host Concordia University Wisconsin next Saturday at 1:00.
