Sept. 22, 2012 - The Concordia men's soccer team earned its first point in three Northern Athletics Conference matches this afternoon in playing to a 1-1 tie with visiting Marian University.

DeAndre McLaurin (Joliet, IL/Joliet West) gave the Cougars a 1-0 lead in the 28th minute with his first goal of the season. McLaurin pounced on a Sabres' turnover in the middle of the field, dribbled to the top of the box while holding off a defender and slid the ball underneath Marian goalkeeper Bryce Woldt to the left side of the net.

The Cougars came up short in their oportunities to score an all-important second goal. Woldt came up strong on a couple of chances from Concordia's Anthony Giammanco (Bartlett, IL/South Elgin).

Late in the second half, the Sabres put together a good 10-minute run of play in the Cougars' end of the field which finally resulted in the tying goal. Cougar keeper Jose Guzman (Cicero, IL/Morton East) was unable to handle Danny Heerhold's shot from 25 yards out, and the momentum of the shot carried off of Guzman's hands into the net in the 85th minute.

Neither team scored in the two overtimes, although the Cougars had two great chances. Giammanco's volley from the left side was saved by an alert Woldt, and Michael Amezcua's (Cicero, IL/Morton East) rebound shot from close in sailed just over the crossbar.

The Cougars will travel to Lisle Wednesday night to play Benedictine University.
