Cougar Men Shut Down by Lake Forest

Box Score
Oct. 1, 2012 - The Concordia Cougar men's soccer team took on Lake Forest College this afternoon in non-conference action at LFC's Farwell Field. The host Foresters controlled play for much of the 90 minutes and defeated the Cougars by a final score of 4-0.
Concordia had an early opportunity to take the lead, but Ethan Guenther made the save on the shot by Daniel Ortiz (Cicero, IL/Morton East). Soon after, Alexi Spiratos looked to give the hosts the lead, but his shot was parried by Jose Landa (Round Lake, IL/H.S.) who made his second start of the season.
Mahir Mameledzija broke the ice in the 19th minute, finishing off a pair of passes. The Foresters stepped up the pressure following the goal as Landa was forced to make three saves over the next five minutes. However, Lake Forest made it a 2-0 lead in the 33rd minutes on Spiratos' goal.
Lake Forest finished the half with a 10-2 advantage in shots. Landa made six saves while Guenther saved two shots, both by Ortiz.
Freshman Edgar Martinez (Chicago, IL/Cristo Rey) took over in the Cougar goal to start the second half. Once again, the Cougars saw an early scoring chance fall short as a shot by Diego Diaz (Cicero, IL/Morton East) went wide right. Moments later, Mameledzija struck again off an assist from Spiratos for a 3-0 lead.
The Forester defense protected the lead, allowing just a shot by Hector Godinez (Indian Head Park, IL/Lyons Township) that sailed high. Lake Forest scored its fourth goal with 40 seconds remaining in the match for the final margin.
Martinez made four saves in his 45 minutes of work, giving Cougar goalkeepers a combined 10 for the day. Lake Forest took 22 total shots compared to Concordia's four.
The Cougars (1-8-2) return to Northern Athletics Conference play Tuesday afternoon with a match at Aurora University.
