Box Score
Oct. 17, 2012 - Second chances don't always come along, but when
Hillary Campbell (Dyer, IN/Lake Central) got hers, she did not miss it.
Campbell's header in the 108th minute of this afternoon's women's soccer match against Wisconsin Lutheran College gave Concordia-Chicago a 1-0 victory and kept alive the Cougars' chances of securing a Northern Athletics Conference tournament berth.
Much was at stake for both teams today, and the intensity of the game picked up as the game progressed. Midway through the second half, a torrential rain hit Concordia Stadium, but that only seemed to add to the fervor on both sides.
Wisconsin Lutheran's defense controlled the first half and kept Concordia from mounting any serious scoring chances. The Cougars were credited with just one shot, that by Campbell late in the half. However, the Warriors had just four shots, one of them saved by
Callie Hasselbring (Houston, TX/Cypress Ridge).
Concordia took advantage of a prevailing south wind in the second half and began to turn up the attack. The Cougars' chances increased, but Campbell,
Alyssa Soulis (Grayslake, IL/Grayslake North) and
Anne Rockert (Limestone, IL/Herscher) were denied on close-in opportunities.
Neither team had any quality scoring chances in the first overtime period. The Cougars were attacking against the wind in the second extra session, but their big chance came at the halfway mark. Campbell fired a shot from about 20 yards out that curled high and away from the Warriors' keeper, but the ball struck the left post and caromed out of danger.
With 2:07 left in the overtime, the second chance came for the Cougars.
Shawna Rembold (Rochester, MI/Stoney Creek) controlled the ball along the end line on the right side. Rembold lofted a cross into the box from where Campbell headed it low to the left post. The ball nestled in the corner for Campbell's 12th goal and third game-winning goal of her rookie season. The tally also extended her scoring streak to four matches in which she has eight goals.
The Cougars finished with a 13-9 edge in shots. Hasselbring earned her second shutout of the season, making three saves.
Concordia (7-7-1, 5-6-0 NAC) will hit the road this weekend for non-conference matches at Northland International University on Saturday and Finlandia University on Sunday.
