Oct. 16, 2012 - Two goals by visiting Wisconsin Lutheran College in a span of 16 seconds spelled a tough 3-1 loss for the Concordia Cougar men's soccer team.
The Warriors came out with a quick burst and scored just 86 seconds into the match. Austin Drake's cross from the left rolled directly in front of the goal from where Teffie Joyce beat the defenders to the ball and had a point-blank shot for the opening goal.
Concordia settled down after the first few minutes and played on more even terms for the remainder of the half. The Cougars' best chance came in the 32rd minute as
Kyle Joss' (St. Charles, IL/St. Charles North) shot from outside the box was saved by Jon Stewart.
The tempo of play picked up in the second half, and play began a bit more physical. Finally, in the 76th minute, the Cougars were whistled for a foul in the goal area with the Warriors awarded a penalty kick. Mavric Otterstatter's kick was saved by a diving
Jorge Guzman (Cicero, IL/Morton East), but the rebound came right back to Otterstatter. He did not miss on the second chance and fired high into the net.
Just seconds after the goal, the Cougars were whistled for a foul at midfield. On the restart, Nate Wasser's kick was carried by the wind into the box. Guzman played the ball on one hop but could not get full control. Brad Mallmann was perched on the doorstep, and he buried the rebound past Guzman for a 3-0 lead.
The Cougars got one goal back in the 81st minute. A Warriors' defender slide-tackled the ball away from a Cougar attacker, but the ball came back to
Michael Amezcua (Cicero, IL/Morton East) on the left side, just outside of the box. Amezcua's shot sailed to the right post, dipping past Stewart into the corner. The goal was Amezcua's second of the season.
Wisconsin Lutheran edged Concordia in shots by a 14-13 final. Stewart was credited with five saves while Guzman recorded four.
The loss spoiled the day for the eight senior players honored before the match. They included
Kyle Bergmann (Bloomingdale, IL/Lake Park), Willie Brinati (Norridge, IL/Ridgewood), Alex Lopez (Streamwood, IL/H.S.), Bryan Lopez (Bloomingdale, IL/Lake Park), Chayanne Martinez (Carpentersville, IL/Dundee-Crown), Tyler Nehmer (Milwaukee, WI/Milwaukee Lutheran), Daniel Ortiz (Cicero, IL/Morton East) and Joss.
