Oct. 12, 2012 - The Maranatha Baptist Bible College Crusaders made two first-half goals stand up in a 2-0 men's soccer win over the Concordia Cougars Friday afternoon in Watertown, Wisconsin.
The two teams battled close to the vest during the first 45 minutes, each credited with eight shots. But Marvin Klaudt's shot in the 28th minute was the first to find the back of the net. Five minutes later, Taylor Pill made it 2-0 with an unasasisted tally.
Following the second goal, the Cougars stepped up the attack.
Daniel Ortiz (Cicero, IL/Morton East), Michael Amezcua (Cicero, IL/Morton East) and
Brendan Mullane (Park Ridge, IL/Maine South) all had opportunities only to see their shots go wide of the goal.
Concordia kept up the pressure in the second half, taking 12 shots to Maranatha's four. However, Kyle Kutz made five saves in the half including stops of shots by
Alex Lopez (Streamwood, IL/H.S.) and
Tyler Nehmer (Milwaukee, WI/Milwaukee Lutheran) in the final minutes.
Jorge Guzman (Cicero, IL/Morton East) and
Jose Landa (Round Lake, IL/H.S.) each played a half in goal. Guzman made one save while allowing both of the Crusaders' goals, and Landa saved the only two shots he faced.
The Cougar men (2-11-2, 2-5-2 NAC) will host Ripon College Sunday afternoon in a non-conference match.
