Oct. 9, 2012 - The Concordia-Chicago women's soccer team left their three-game losing streak in the dust this afternoon as they routed visiting Rockford College by a 12-0 score.
The scoring opened in the ninth minute when Rockford was whistled for a handball in the box. Freshman
Hillary Campbell (Dyer, IN/Lake Central) converted from the spot for her fifth goal of the season.
Haley Graner (Waukesha, WI/Waukesha West) made it a 2-0 game three minutes later.
Lilly Poor (Bloomington, IN/Bloomington North) lofted a cross from the right wing. Graner redirected the ball with a perfect header past Catherine Holesha for her second of the year.
Graner struck again in the 26th minute, knocking home a cross by
Alyssa Soulis (Grayslake, IL/Grayslake North). Soulis followed up with goals five and six for the year, first dribbling in from the left sideline and scoring from close range and later taking a lead pass from
Wendy Sotelo (Chicago, IL/DeLaSalle) to advance on Holesha before tucking the ball low to the right side.
Freshman
Alex Wilson (Round Lake, IL/Grayslake Central) closed out the first-half scoring with a 41st-minute strike off of
Maggie Kucek's (Oak Forest, IL/H.S.) assist. Concordia outshot Rockford 21-2 and went into halftime with a 6-0 lead.
The Cougars picked up where they left off with a three-goal burst in the first six minutes of the second half. Campbell started the run dribbling up the middle of the field past a couple of defenders before beating Holesha from seven yards out
. Angela Powers (Palos Heights, IL/Shepard) followed with her first of the year, running onto a perfect centering pass from Soulis and finishing with a hard shot on which Holesha had no chance to stop. Campbell made it a 9-0 game, completing her hat trick with Soulis' third assist setting up the opportunity.
Concordia hit double digits off a corner kick in the 69th minute. Poor's restart curled in front of the goal from where Kucek pounced on the ball in a crowd and flicked it past Holesha for her first of 2012.
Poor tallied her second goal in the last two matches, taking a pass from
Cassie Sarokin (Green Bay, WI/NEW Lutheran) and breaking in from the right wing. Freshman
Shawna Rembold (Rochester, MI/Stoney Creek) closed out the scoring with 10 minutes remaining as
Samantha Wolf's (Lake in the Hills, IL/Crystal Lake South) pass found her alone in the box for a 10-yard shot.
The Cougars finished with a 35-6 advantage in shots. Holesha made 12 saves for the Regents. Three Cougar goalkeepers
- Callie HAsselbring (Houston, TX/Cypress Ridge), Sarah Ann Evers (Napoleon, OH/H.S.) and
Danielle Garza (Fenton, MI/H.S.) combined for the shutout. Evers made three saves while Garza added two.
Concordia (5-7-0, 3-6-0 NAC) will look for two in a row when they travel to Maranatha Baptist Bible College on Friday afternoon.
