Oct. 10, 2012 - The Concordia men's soccer team, still in the hunt for a berth in the Northern Athletics Conference tournament, earned a crucial victory this afternoon with a 3-0 shutout of visiting Rockford College. The Cougars improved to 2-4-2 in NAC play (2-10-2) and moved into a seventh place tie with Marian University.
DeAndre McLaurin (Joliet, IL/Joliet West) gave Concordia the lead just 80 seconds after kickoff. DeLaurin ran onto a long pass from
Michael Amezcua (Cicero, IL/Morton West), broke in alone on Rockford keeper Mick Goulding and slotted the ball low to the left side of the net for his team-leading sixth goal of the season.
The Cougars pressed the Regents for the entire half with an 18-0 advantage in shots, but Goulding kept his team close with eight saves. The only other shot in the half to elude Goulding was a 34th minute goal by
Anthony Giammanco (Bartlett, IL/South Elgin). A loose ball was deflected in front of the goal from where Giammanco redirected it home for his first of the season.
The lone goal of the second half came from sophomore
Brendan Mullane (Park Ridge, IL/Maine South). Mullane's first goal of the season came from 15 yards out on the right wing. Goulding got his hands on the ball but could not control the hard shot as it settled into the back of the net.
Concordia finished the game with a 30-4 edge in shots.
Jose Landa (Round Lake, IL/H.S.) earned the win, playing the first 60 minutes in goal.
Edgar Martinez (Chicago, IL/Cristo Rey) and
Gabriel Lozano (Joliet, IL/Joliet West) finished up for the combined shutout with Lozano making the only two saves of the day.
The Cougars will travel to Watertown, Wisconsin on Friday to take on Maranatha Baptist Bible College.
