Cougar Men Stung by Second-Half Goal

Box Score
Sept. 27, 2011 - The Concordia men's soccer team's ninth straight loss had more of a bitter taste to it than any of the previous eight. Within a 60-second span, an apparent 1-0 lead became a 1-0 deficit, and the Eagles of Benedictine University made the 53rd minute goal hold up in beating the Cougars.
The visiting Eagles had the better of play over the first 45 minutes, taking seven shots to the Cougars' two. However, Jorge Guzman (Cicero, IL/Morton East) made three saves including one on a point-blank header to keep the match scoreless at the half.
Concordia started the second half with a burst of energy and, seven minutes in, it appeared to pay off in a goal. Benedictine keeper Orlando Esparza cleared a dangerous pass through the goal mouth off to the side, but the ball was passed back to Taylor Nehmer (Milwaukee, WI/Milwaukee Lutheran). From about 13 yards out, Nehmer hit a shot that was ticketed for just inside the left post. The ball glanced off a defender and appeared to settle in the goal before the keeper cleared the ball away. However, play continued with no goal called.
Less than a minute later, the Eagles capitalized while the buzz about the no goal call continued. Edgar Reyes slipped a pass through to Mostafa Abdelrahman who beat Guzman from the top of the box.
The sequence fired up the Cougars, and they played most of the next 15-20 minutes in the Eagles' end of the field. However, Esparza made saves on Nehmer, Chris Jahns (Roselle, IL/Lake Park) and Brendan Mullane (Park Ridge, IL/Maine South) to keep the Cougars from notching the tying goal.
Concordia (1-9-0, 0-4-0 NAC) will play at Lakeland College on Saturday.
