Box Score
Oct. 8, 2011 - While the effort has been there even in the midst of a long winless streak, the law of averages has not come around for the Cougar men's soccer team yet. Evidence of that came in the form of today's 2-1 loss to visiting Edgewood College.
Each team had scoring chances in the early going, but it was the Cougars that drew first blood. Kyle Joss (St. Charles, IL/St. Charles North) tallied his first of the season on a 15-yard shot from slightly to the left of goal.
Edgewood evened the score in the 21st minute, less than four minutes after Joss' goal. Sam Quinones ripped a hard shot from the left wing that John Gehm (Frankenmuth, MI/H.S.) got his hands on but could not stop completely.
It appeared as if the teams were headed into halftime tied at 1-1 but, with 19 seconds left, the game turned on a freak play. Trying to play the ball forward from just behind midfield, Clayton James' (Pleasant Plains, IL/Springfield Lutheran) pass along the right sideline deflected off a defender and caromed back into play and into the path of Edgewood's Kelmend Isaj. He took a touch and sent a thru pass ahead to Jacob Overman who angled into the box and slipped a shot past Gehm into the right corner of the net.
The Cougars outshot the Eagles 6-4 in the second half with the best chance to tie coming in the final minute. Concordia earned a corner kick from where Alex Lopez (Streamwood, IL/H.S.) sent the ball directly in front of the net. Manny Valdez (Brookfield, IL/St. Joseph) got great position for a header, but the ball went directly into the goalkeeper's hands.
Concordia will play at Rockford College on Tuesday afternoon.
