Box Score
Oct. 5, 2011 - The Concordia men's soccer team suffered its fifth one-goal loss of the season this afternoon as Aurora University scored in the 89th minute for a 1-0 win.
The Cougars had the better of play in the first half. They fired seven shots at Spartans' keeper Nick Sloan while not allowing an Aurora shot for the first 23 minutes.
John Gehm (Frankenmuth, MI/H.S.) was needed to make just two saves for the half while Sloan recorded three.
The tempo and the physical play picked up in the second half. In the 56th minute, Aurora received a grand opportunity to take the lead when they were awarded a penalty kick resulting from a foul in the corner of the box. However, Gehm guessed right on Matt Houghtaylen's shot, and his diving save kept the game scoreless.
Concordia had the next two chances to break the deadlock. Twice,
DeAndre McLaurin (Joliet, IL/Joliet West) picked the pocket of an Aurora player and broke in on goal alone. However, Sloan came up with the big save on both occasions, and the teams went to the final 20 minutes still looking for the deciding goal.
With just under two minutes remaining, Christian Foote's shot was blocked over the end line, giving the Spartans a corner kick. The kick curled to the left post into a crowd of people. The ball caromed off a Concordia defender and came to Houghtaylen in front. Houghtaylen's shot from five yards out found the back of the net as Aurora broke through to the scoreboard with 1:25 left.
The Cougars (1-11-0, 0-6-0 NAC) will host Edgewood College on Saturday.
