Oct. 19, 2011 - Conditions were less than ideal for soccer on Wednesday night in Milwaukee, but the Concordia Cougars and Wisconsin Lutheran Warriors played one of the more competitive and exciting contests of the season on a rainy, cold and windy night. In the end, a late goal by
DeAndre McLaurin (Joliet, IL/Joliet West) allowed the Cougars to come home with a point in the standings by way of a 3-3 tie.
The Warriors took a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute on James Sather's goal, but the Cougars evened the score in the 28th minute. Taking advantage of one of four corner kicks in the half,
Taylor Nehmer's (Milwaukee, WI/Milwaukee Lutheran) cross found
Clayton James (Pleasant Plains, IL/Springfield Lutheran), and the freshman buried his first goal of the season.
Concordia took the lead midway through the second half as McLaurin converted a pass from
Chris Jahns (Roselle, IL/Lake Park) for goal number five of his rookie season. But Wisconsin Lutheran drew even when Nate Waggoner, who assisted on Sather's goal, finished off a series of one-touch passes in beating
Jorge Guzman (Cicero, IL/Morton East).
With just under four minutes remaining, Waggoner struck again to put the Warriors within reach of victory. The Cougars wasted no time in responding as McLaurin took a pass from
Dan Drida (Milwaukee, WI/Milwaukee Lutheran) and scored his second of the match to tie the game at 3-3.
The two teams continued to battle on even terms throughout the two 10-minute overtime periods. Both teams were credited with four shots in the extra time but none of them were on target. The game ended with the Cougars and Warriors each having 14 shots.
The Cougars (3-12-1, 2-7-1 NAC) will return to action quickly with a 7:00 game Thursday night at the University of Chicago.
