Cougar Men Strike Early, Defeat Maranatha
Oct. 14, 2011 - While much of the 2011 season has been a difficult one for the Concordia men's soccer team, they may get to finish it with a big kick. The Cougars scored twice in the first six minutes of today's match and held on to defeat Maranatha Baptist Bible College by the 2-0 score.
Chris Jahns (Roselle, IL/Lake Park), one of seven seniors making his final home appearance today, gave Concordia a 1-0 lead at the 3:54 mark. Taking a pass from
Kyle Bergmann (Bloomingdale, IL/Lake Park), Jahns muscled between two defenders into the box and beat the oncoming keeper for his second goal in the last two matches.
Jahns had an indirect role in the second goal less than two minutes later. Breaking in from the left side, he sent a pass across the goalmouth which was inadvertantly knocked in by a Maranatha defender. The play was credited as an own goal, doubling the Cougars' lead.
Concordia's defense held firm although it was tested by the visitors. Maranatha finished the game with a 16-6 edge in shots, but
John Gehm (Frankenmuth, MI/H.S.) and
Jorge Guzman (Cicero, IL/Morton East) combined for five saves in posting the victory.
The win was a fitting send-off for the team's seven seniors - Jahns, Gehm
, Kevin Devrient (North Ridgeville, OH/H.S.), Kevin Hughes (Itasca, IL/Lake Park), Ben Klingberg (LaGrange Park, IL/Lyons Township), Abel Sauer (Chicago, IL/DeLaSalle) and
James Zinni (Roselle, IL/Lake Park).
The Cougars (3-12-0, 2-7-0 NAC) will play at Wisconsin Lutheran College on Wednesday, Oct. 19.
