Box Score
Oct. 11, 2011 - Everything came together for the Concordia men's soccer game at Rockford College this afternoon. The Cougars took control of the match early with some key goals and coasted to a 5-0 win over the Regents. The win was the first for the Cougars since the season-opening win against Webster University.
Concordia took the lead in the seventh minute with Anthony Giammanco's (Bartlett, IL/South Elgin) second goal of the season. The goal was created by some nifty one-touch passing by Kyle Joss (St. Charles, IL/St. Charles North) and Chris Jahns (Roselle, IL/Lake Park). Head coach Micah Middendorf noted, "Anthony had a solid finish, and the build-up to the goal was a very pretty one. Scoring that type of goal early in the match really gave us some confidence, and you could see it as the first half went on."
Joss made it a 2-0 lead 10 minutes later with his second goal in the last two games. Jahns scored his first of the year in the 22nd minute, and Jake Hawthorne (Fort Smith, AR/Van Buren) made it a 4-0 game with an unassisted tally in the 42nd minute. For Hawthorne, it was his second of the year - the first coming as the game-winning goal in the Webster match.
Rockford stepped up their attack in the second half in an attempt to get back into the contest, but Concordia continued to have the better of the play. The Cougars fired 18 shots to the Regents' eight with the lone goal coming three minutes into the half. DeAndre McLaurin (Joliet, IL/Joliet West) scored his team-leading fifth goal of the season with Giammanco picking up the assist.
Jorge Guzman (Cicero, IL/Morton East) earned his first win of the season in goal, making six saves. Freshman Seth Stockdell (Kokomo, IN/Taylor) saw his first action of the season, playing the final eight minutes in relief of Guzman.
The Cougars will look to make it two in a row Friday afternoon when they host Maranatha Baptist Bible College at 3 p.m., following the women's game.
