Sept. 29, 2010 - The Cougars traveled to Aurora this afternoon for the first of two conference road matches this week. Concordia was up against first-place Aurora University, and the Spartans improved to 4-0 in Northern Athletics Conference play with a 6-0 win over the Cougars (2-7-2, 0-2-1 NAC).
It was too much Nick Helmer for the Cougars as the Spartans' forward scored Aurora's first four goals. Helmer opened the scoring in the ninth minute off of the first of two assists by Anthony Amedei. He later scored in the 16th and 27th minutes to open up a 3-0 lead for the hosts at the half and then added goal number four just 62 seconds into the second half.
Aurora fired 14 shots in the first half with Concordia's Bart Loos (Evans, NY/St. Francis) making a pair of saves. The Cougars' best scoring chance came in the final minute of the half when Kevin Soderstrom denied freshman Anthony Giammanco (Bartlett, IL/South Elgin).
The Spartans added their final two tallies in the 51st and 80th minutes, content afterwards to keep the Cougars from denting the scoreboard. Alex Lopez (Streamwoos, IL/H.S.) had an opportunity in the final two minutes, but his shot missed wide.
Concordia will play their second road match for the week on Saturday when they take on concordia Wisconsin in Mequon.
