Sept. 26, 2010 - The Concordia-Chicago Cougars came out on the short end of a 2-0 score this afternoon against the visiting Franklin College Grizzlies from Indiana. It was the third straight loss for the Cougars after a three-game unbeaten streak.
Junior Kevin Hughes (Itasca, IL/Lake Park) made his second start of the year in goal for the Cougars. He faced 10 shots in the first half with one making it past him. That came in the 12th minute as Franklin earned a corner kick from the left side. The cross found Craig Wood in front, and he headed the ball past Hughes for a 1-0 lead.
The Grizzlies' lead became 2-0 in the 60th minute when Wood's thru-pass hit Andreas Kapsalis in perfect stride. Kapsalis came in all alone and beat Hughes low to the right.
Concordia, held to just one shot in the first half, fired 12 in the second but were unable to capitalize. The best chance came in the 79th minute on a foul just outside the box. Mario Grana's (Elmhurst, IL/York Community) low rocket was blocked just before reaching the keeper. The rebound came out to Mike Kozlowski (Alsip, IL/Shepard), and the freshman tried to chip the keeper. Lucas Hill stayed back on his line and deflected the shot over the crossbar for a corner kick, but the ensuing kick was cleared out of the zone to end the Cougars' biggest threat.
Franklin finished with 14 shots to Concordia's 13. Hughes made four saves in goal while Hill made three.
The Cougars (2-6-2) resume Northern Athletics Conference play on Wednesday when they play at Aurora University.
