Sept. 23, 2010 – The Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) named Concordia-Chicago senior wide receiver Mike Egebrecht (Wheeling, Ill. – Buffalo Grove H.S.) as its Football (Offense) Student-Athlete of the Week for the week of Sept. 13-19. Egebrecht becomes the second player in three weeks to snare the award; Cougar quarterback Mike Marotta (Brookfield, Ill. – Riverside-Brookfield H.S.) won it for his opening week performance against Lake Forest College.
Egebrecht enjoyed a record day in Concordia's 49-7 win over the College of St. Scholastica in the Sept. 18 home opener. He caught 14 passes, tying a record held by three other Cougars (most recently, Dustin White in 2004). Egebrecht's receptions totaled 162 yards with two of them going for touchdowns of six and 31 yards.
The combination of Egebrecht and Marotta has proven to be a lethal one against Concordia opponents recently. Through three games this season, Marotta has completed 63 of 108 passes for 789 yards, 10 touchdowns and a quarterback rating of 144.70. Egebrecht has caught 28 of those passes for 345 yards (12.3 yards per catch) and four touchdowns.
Concordia head coach Lonnie Pries notes that the success of these players comes naturally. “Both of them are seniors with a lot of knowledge and experience. They've played together for a while now and developed a good feel for where each other is on the field. If we continue to give Marotta the time to throw and he keeps getting the ball to Egebrecht, we'll continue to have a lot of success on offense.”
