Sept. 12, 2010 - The Cougar men's soccer team played their first two road matches of the season on consecutive days as they traveled to Missouri to battle two schools from the St. Louis Conference (SLIAC). Concordia fought hard but came up short on both days, losing 3-0 to Webster University and 4-2 to Westminster College.
In Saturday's match against Webster, the hosts bolted to the early lead with two goals in the first 14 minutes. The Gorloks then settled into a defensive mode as they took just three more shots for the half. Concordia would be limited to just four shots for the entire match, three on net. Bart Loos (Evans, NY/St. Francis) made four saves on the day, allowing one more Gorloks' tally in the 70th minute.
Sunday's game at Westminster College was a little more wide open. The two teams exchanged penalty kick goals in the first 25 minutes with Graham Lloyd tallying for the Blue Jays and Chris Jahns (Roselle, IL/Lake Park) putting the Cougars on the board.
Westminster took the lead with 13 minutes remaining in the half and then seized control of the match with two goals a minute apart in the second half. Freshman Anthony Giammanco (Bartlett, IL/South Elgin) pulled one goal back for the Cougars in the 74th minute with his first collegiate goal, but Concordia would not dent the net any further.
The Blue Jays fired 22 shots to the Cougars' eight. Kevin Hughes (Itasca, IL/Lake Park) made his first collegiate start in goal and was credited with nine saves.
Concordia (0-2-1) will travel to Lake Forest College on Tuesday for its fourth straight non-conference match.
