Oct. 6, 2010 - The Concordia Cougars and the Rockford Regents went into this afternoon's men's soccer match in River Forest both searching for their first win in Northern Athletics Conference play. However, neither team was able to gain the upper hand over the course of 110 minutes, and the game ended in a scoreless draw.
The game was a mostly evenly-matched one as both teams created scoring chances throughout the day. the earlier one came just two minutes in on a pass on the right side to Samuel Hambissa (Ostrander, OH/Buckeye Valley), but Hambissa's shot from seven yards out went high.
Five minutes later, Rockford had their first good chance as Andy Fahrenwald appeared to have a step on a Cougar defender as he charged up the middle with the ball. However, the ball ran a bit on the fast turf, and Cougar keeper Bart Loos (Evans, NY/St. Francis) came out to the top of the box to smother the ball just in time to prevent Fahrenwald from firing.
In the second half, the intensity and tempo picked up. Concordia had more opportunities, the best coming when Rolando Zuniga (Melrose Park, IL/St. Joseph) received the ball on the left side witin 10 yards, but his shot went wide of the right post. Late in the half, it was Rockford that threatened to score, but Loos did well to tip a shot by Ricky Gonzalez over the crossbar.
Rockford saw a magnificent effort go by the boards in the first overtime. Oscar Ortega fired a shot from the left side that Loos made an acrobatic save on. The ball came back to Ortega, and his second shot beat Loos but struck the right post. The danger was not over as the ball came out to Sam Medina-Conchi, but his 25-yarder went wide to the left.
The final chance of the day went to the Cougars, but a header by Chris Jahns (Roselle, IL/Lake Park) went over the bar to keep the game at 0-0.
The Regents outshot the Cougars by the slimmest of margins, 15 to 14. Loos saved five of Rockford's shots while Regents' keeper Matt Zawadzki made four saves.
Concordia (2-8-3, 0-3-2 NAC) will host Marian on Saturday afternoon at 4:00 following the Cougars' Homecoming football game.
