Oct. 19, 2010 - Four goals by freshman Alyssa Soulis (Grayslake, IL/Grayslake North) led the Concordia-Chicago women's soccer team to a 4-1 victory today over visiting Rockford College. The win was the first of the 2010 season for the Cougars.
Concordia had the edge in play from the very start, although it took until the 39th minute to put the first goal on the board. Soulis received a throw-in from midfield along the left sideline, accelerated past a defender and beat Regents' keeper Shiela Roijas with a low shot from 13 yards out.
Just 37 seconds later, the Cougars doubled their lead. Lindsay Dyal's (Eagle River, Alaska/Chugiak) hard shot was saved by Roijas, but the keeper was helpless as Soulis was perched on the doorstep and fired the rebound into the net. The 2-0 lead carried to the end of the half.
Rockford cut into the lead in the 63rd minute as Alyssa Baggio's high shot from about 20 yards out evaded the reach of Concordia keeper Sarah Ann Evers (Napoleon, OH/H.S.). However, the Cougars answered 2 1/2 minutes later as Soulis notched her hat trick. Lyndsay Cochran (Manchester, ME/Maranacook Community) sent Soulis in with a perfect thru-pass, and Soulis one-timed the ball just inside the far post from 15 yards out.
Soulis completed the scoring in the 69th minute with a high shot from the left side perfectly placed between Roijas and the crossbar.
Concordia finished with 17 shots to Rockford's five. Evers made one save in earning her first win in net. Roijas made five saves for the Regents.
The Cougars' match against Millikin University on Wednesday has been cancelled and will not be rescheduled. Concordia's women return to action on Saturday when they play at Maraatha Baptist Bible College on Watertown, Wisconsin.
