Jim Russo joined the Cougar women's basketball coaching staff as an Assistant Coach in the fall of 2024.

With over three decades of experience shaping young athletes and building championship-caliber teams, Coach Russo has earned the reputation as one of the most respected coaches in the state. His career spans from national AAU programs to high school coaching, where his leadership has consistently brought success at the highest levels of competition. 


Coaching Career Highlights:

  • 1991-2001: Head Coach, National AAU Final A Division I — Guided the team to national recognition, developing top-tier athletes who competed at the collegiate level and beyond.
  • 2000-2001: Head Coach, Holy Cross Boys High School — Led the program with a focus on excellence, character, and winning.
  • 2002-2012: Head Coach, Regina Dominican High School — Achieved remarkable success with the team, including three IHSA Class 2A Sweet 16 appearances and a 3rd place finish at the 2002-03 IHSA Class 2A State Finals.
  • 2015: Associate Head Coach, Trinity High School — Contributed to a strong season culminating in a 3rd place finish at the IHSA Class 3A State Finals.

Accolades and Honors:

  • 2011: GCAC Hall of Fame Inductee (Individual)
  • 2015: IBCA Hall of Fame Inductee
  • 2019: GCAC Hall of Fame Inductee (Team/Coach)
  • 2003: Coach of the Year
  • 1996-2016: Illinois AAU Basketball Chair (Girls Division), helping to elevate the level of competition and develop young talent across the state.
In addition to his coaching success, Coach Russo has had a profound impact on the growth of girls basketball in Illinois. As Chair of the AAU Illinois Basketball Girls Division, he worked to expand the opportunities for young female athletes, ensuring that future generations of female athletes had the guidance and structure needed to succeed. 

Coach Russo is a proud father of four -- Nick, Adam, Kelli, and Libby -- and a grandfather to three -- Jonathan, Thomas, and Grayson. His commitment to his family mirrors his dedication to his athletes.Â
