Rashaan Surles received a promotion to head men's basketball coach for the 2022-23 season. He previously joined the Concordia University Chicago men’s basketball staff as an assistant coach in October of 2022.
In his first two seasons as the head coach of the Cougars, Surles led the team to the NACC playoffs, marking two of six total playoff appearances in program history. In the first two seasons, he added 24 total wins while picking up three players with All-Conference accolades and a Defensive Player of the Year.
Surles has over ten years of basketball experience and comes to River Forest after spending time in Lubbock, Texas as the graduate assistant coach under Mark Adams at Texas Tech University. Prior to his time at Texas Tech, Surles spent a year coaching under Tom Crean at the University of Georgia. There he helped run the scout team, break down film, and help facilitate on-court development.
Surles also has coaching experience with Spartz Sportz, Kennedy King College, Wiz Kids Sports Camp, and Basketball U in Chicago.
Surles played two years for the world-renowned Harlem Globetrotters, playing all over the world. Additionally, he played for two years at Division I Mississippi Valley State. There he appeared in 65 games over two years. He capped off his collegiate career by averaging 9.9 points per game during the 2016-17 season, where he shot 43.3 percent from the field. Surles graduated as a Cum Laude student from Mississippi Valley State with a BA in Business Administration. Surles also played the 2013-14 season at Prairie View A&M University, where the Panthers finished as runners-up in the SWAC.
Surles grew up in Homewood, Illinois, where he was a four-year member of the basketball team that was ranked as a top-25 team in Illinois.
