River Forest, Ill. - The Concordia University Chicago women's basketball team welcomed the Eagles of Edgewood University to face off for another NACC win. After an intense back-and-forth battle, the Cougars took the game with a final score of 60-59.
Inside the Box Score:
- Grace King (Fairland, Ind.) led the game with 18 points, while also leading with nine rebounds, five steals, and one block.
- Ai Yonemura (Yachiyo, Chiba-Japan) left the game with 15 points, three assists, two rebounds, two steals, and one block.
- Naveya Jackson (Sun Prairie, Wis.) ended the game with 14 points, three rebounds, one block and one steal.
Here's What Happened
First Quarter
The Cougars started off strong with a strong three from Yonemura. After a little bit of a scoring drought, King came in with a quick layup off of an Edgewood turnover.
Abbi Dykstra (Yale, Mich.) joined the previous scorers with a jumper, putting the Cougars up by seven points. The Eagles had finally put themselves on the board with a three. The Eagles continued to stay in the deficit, even with points slowly rolling in. The teams tied up before a driving layup from Jackson had put the Cougars back on top. The Cougars went into the second quarter leading by three points, 14-11.
Second Quarter
Yonemura started off the scoring with a driving layup, quickly followed up by two 3-pointers. The Cougars remained in a five-point lead, 22-19. The Eagles began their ascent, getting themselves within two. Yonemura and
Kira Holliday (Roselle, Ill.) played off each other as they brought the lead back up to six. King had put down back-to-back jumpers. The Cougars went into halftime in the lead at 30-24.
Third Quarter
The Eagles got in the first points of the third quarter with a layup. With a perfect pass from
Hannah Lopez (Chicago, Ill.), King got in a layup. A 3-pointer from an Eagle had put the Eagles within three. The teams battled for the lead, but a layup from Jackson kept the Eagles down. Jackson had put down a three, strengthening the Cougar lead. Layups from the Eagles had put them right on the Cougars' tails. The Cougars closed the quarter in the lead, the Eagles closing in at 39-38.
Fourth Quarter
A three from the Eagles began the fourth quarter, taking the lead for the first time. The teams fought once more for the top spot, trading points.
Jocelyn Chammas (Chicago, Ill.) had let go of a beautiful three, putting the Cougars within two. A layup in the paint from King had put the Cougars right behind the Eagles, 48-49. Jackson had put up a major fight, trading points with the Eagles, putting the Cougars within one. With 0:10 remaining,
Sophia Pedraza (Carol Stream, Ill.) got a layup in, tying the teams up. Pedraza aided the Cougars in retaking the lead with 0:02 left. The Cougars took the game with a final score of 60-59.
