Cougars Fall Short in Physical Match Against the Warriors

RIVER FOREST, ILL.- The Concordia University Chicago (CUC) Cougars women's basketball team hosted the Wisconsin Lutheran College (WLC) Warriors for another Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) matchup. After an early lead through a physical against the Warriors, the Cougars fell short with a final score of 89-57.
 
INSIDE THE BOX
  • Grace King (Fairland, Ind.) led the Cougar offensive with 13 points and three rebounds, 
  • Ai Yonemura (Yachiyo, Chiba-Japan) finished second with 12 points and eight assists. 
  • Naveya Jackson (Sun Prairie, Wis.) ended the game with nine points. 
  • Abby Kulig (Carol Stream, Ill.) battled hard finishing with eight points. 
 
HERE'S WHAT HAPPENED
FIRST QUARTER
The Warriors were first to score with a layup to open the quarter, but following behind closely was the Cougars with a great basket by Kulig assisted by Yonemura, creating a battle from the jump. The Cougars gained an early lead after Yonemura went on a 5-0 run making a couple of layups and a free throw, increasing the lead 7-2. The Warriors came back, trailing just a point behind the Cougars at 6-7, only for the Cougars to retaliate starting with a jumper made by King off an opponent turnover. Quickly after, the Cougar defense continued to shine with a steal by Sophia Pedraza (Carol Stream, Ill.). The Cougars then scored a three-pointer by Yonemura while Jackson knocked down another, creating a nine-point lead. The Cougars 9-0 run was stopped by the Warriors hitting a free throw. Jackson fought back, splitting two defenders engaging in contact that resulted in a tough basket and completed the three-point play to extend the Cougars lead, 18-7. The Warriors continued fighting by securing a point and three-pointer to get things moving offensively going on a 7-0 run against the Cougars but Pedraza stopped the run with two successful free throws. The Warriors continue their momentum hitting another three-pointer, bringing the score within four points, 20-16. Both teams exchange scoring free throws to end the quarter. The Cougars scored 13 points off turnovers, showcasing their defensive abilities.The quarter ended with the Cougars leading the Warriors, 21-19. 


 
SECOND QUARTER
King opened the quarter with a three-pointer to get things rolling for the Cougars. The Warriors brought themselves to find two back to back points, narrowing the lead to one point. Jackson fought back with a free throw, extending their lead by two for the Cougars. Only for the Warriors to battle and tie the game, 25-25. Both teams exchanged steals for the next couple possessions until the Warriors created a lead by ten, 41-31. Yonemura broke things up for the Cougars by scoring a jumper, followed by King showing strength with securing a layup. The half ended with the Warriors adding four more points to the scoreboard and taking the lead against the Cougars, 50-35. 


 
THIRD QUARTER
The Warriors were first to score with a layup in the third quarter. Abbi Dykstra (Yale, Mich.) matched energy by hitting a three-pointer assisted by Yonemura. Both teams traded baskets off of personal fouls by opponents, with a score of 57-42. The Warriors continued lighting up the floor from the three-point line with the Cougars forced to take a timeout on the Warriors 6-0 run, adding the score to 63-42. Kulig found a much needed bucket after a scoreless two minutes, followed by another layup for Kulig assisted by Jackson. The quarter ended with a made jumper by Jackson, the Cougars falling behind with the Warriors having a 21 point lead, 69-48.



 
FOURTH QUARTER
Coming down to the last quarter, the Warriors opened the half scoring seven points before the Cougars interfered with their scoring drive with a layup, 76-50. After a Warrior three-pointer, King made two of two free throws followed by a jumper. Hannah Lopez (Chicago, Ill.), getting herself in the game off of King's momentum, secured a three-pointer, narrowing the lead by 22. The quarter ended with the Cougars struggling to find net and the Warriors scoring ten consecutive points, closing the game with a final score of 89-57. After hard efforts, the Warriors secured the win against the Cougar by a 32 point deficit, 89-57.
