This Week in CUC Athletics: January 26 – February 1

RIVER FOREST, Ill. – Despite the chilly temperatures outside, Concordia University Chicago (CUC) athletics kept it hot on the court and the track. Check out how all the Cougar action below.
 
Women's Basketball (7-11, 5-5)
The women's basketball team played two conference games this week.
 
First, CUC took on Aurora University. Despite a strong start to the game, the Cougars fell to the Spartans, 102-54. Ai Yonemura (Yachiyo, Chiba-Japan) led the squad with 15 points, going six-for-six from the free throw line. Naveya Jackson (Sun Prairie, Wis.) left her mark with eight points and a team-high six rebounds. Hannah Lopez (Chicago, Ill.) contributed a season-high three assists.
 
The Cougars then went up to Wisconsin to take on St. Norbert College (SNC). Yonemura showed out with a team-high 24 points, but the squad ultimately dropped the contest, 93-50. Lopez added seven points and four rebounds while Jackson recorded six points and four rebounds. Emma Nickerson (Lake City, Mich.) finished the game with five points and two steals.
 
The Cougars play just one Northern Athletic Collegiate Conference (NACC) matchup this week. They will host Concordia University Wisconsin (CUW) at 7:00 pm on Wednesday, January 28.
 
Men's Basketball (6-12, 5-6)
The men's basketball team also played Aurora and SNC this week.
 
Darrian Williams (Garland, Texas) picked up a career-high 26 points in the fast-paced battle with the Spartans, but the Cougars ultimately fell 101-79. Kenton Pryor (Hazel Crest, Ill.) had an all-around game with 11 points, four rebounds, one assist, and three steals. Aaron Brown (Joliet, Ill.) grabbed a team-high 11 boards while adding seven points and two assists. Jacob Robinson (Saint Louis, Mo.) also picked up seven points in addition to four assists and a rebound.
 
Then on Saturday, the Cougars fought hard but fell to the Green Knights of SNC, 85-61. Sebastian Hill (Decatur, Ill.) and Brown led the team in points with 11. Hill also added a rebound and two assists while Brown contributed three rebounds. Robinson put up nine points and grabbed a rebound while  Ryker Johnson (Fond du Lac, Wis.) finished the day with eight points, two assists, and a team-leading six rebounds.
 
This week the Cougars will face CUW on the road on Wednesday, January 28. Tipoff in Mequon, Wis. will be at 7:00 pm.
 
Track & Field
Both track & field teams competed at the Aurora Grand Prix, hosted by Aurora University.
 
On the men's side, Korey Randle (East Moline, Ill.)  took second in the triple jump with a leap of 14.06m, ranking 29th in the 2026 indoor rankings. In the long jump, Jordyn Boatman (Elmwood Park, Ill.) placed eighth with a mark of 6.47m. Dayton Merli (Union Mills, Ind.) finished seventh in the pole vault, clearing 4.00m.
 
On the women's side, Izzy Fairless (Royal Oak, Mich.) placed 14th in the 800m, recording a season's best time of 2:31.56.  Kirsten Bockhorst (Union, Mo.) also picked up a season best performance with a leap of 5.08m in the long jump to finish 13th.
 
Multiple Cougars picked up personal records at the meet, including Matthew Cardwell (Cincinnati, Ohio.), Tremain Dockery (Chicago, Ill.), William Leonard (Oskaloosa, Iowa.), Nathaniel Boksa, Julien Saltos (Chicago, Ill.), Kam Jackson (Chicago, Ill.), Devynn Woywod (Berwyn, Ill.), Ashley Vasquez (Riverside, Ill.), Madison Hipshire (Riverview, Mich.), Addi McKee, Amya Marquez (Berwyn, Ill.), and Harmonie Cooper (Chicago, Ill.).
 
The Cougars' next meet will be the ONU Invitational, hosted by Olivet Nazarene University on Friday, January 30.
 
Men's Volleyball (1-2, 0-0)
The Cougars played two non-conference matches this week.
 
CUC first took on #20 North Central College (NCC). While all four sets were incredibly close, the Cougars fell 3-1. Tyler Holubek (New Lenox, Ill.) led the Cougars with 14 kills, 10 digs, and a block. Jackson Stella (Hoffman Estates, Ill.)  followed closely behind with 10 kills, four blocks, and a dig. Alexander Ford (Skokie, Ill.) also had a strong match, contributing six kills, three blocks, and an ace. Elijah Mosher (Clayton, Ohio) and  Grayson Arn (Beloit, Wis) split time on the court, with Mosher totaling 18 assists while Arn added 16.
 
The Cougars came back to Geiseman Gymnasium on Saturday and in an intense five-set battle, CUC came out on top 3-2 over the Vikings of Augustana College. Stella led the charge with an impressive 16 kills, five digs, and three blocks. Holubek followed with eight kills, six digs, five block, and an assist. Ford was a brick wall at the net with a team-leading six blocks while Mosher tallied 31 assists.
 
This week the Cougars head to Michigan for two matches. On Friday, January 30, CUC will face Calvin University at 7:00 pm EST. The following day, the Cougars will take on Adrian College at 7:00 pm EST.
