Yonemura's 24 Points Lead Cougars in Road Matchup

DE PERE, WIS.- The Concordia University Chicago (CUC) women's basketball team faced the cold trip north to take on the St.Norbert Green Knights. Despite a hard-fought performance, the Green Knights secured a dominant 93-50 victory against the Cougars. 
 
INSIDE THE BOX
  • Ai Yonemura (Yachiyo, Chiba-Japan) led the Cougars offensively with 24 points. 
  • Hannah Lopez (Chicago, Ill.) followed with adding seven points and four rebounds. 
  • Naveya Jackson (Sun Prairie, Wis.) chipped in six points and matched with four rebounds.
  • Emma Nickerson (Lake City, Mich.) finished with five points and recorded two steals. 
 
HERE'S WHAT HAPPENED:
QUARTER ONE
Lopez hit a three-pointer to open the quarter for the Cougars. The Green Knights responded by the lead with two consecutive buckets, bringing the score to 4-3. Lopez took advantage of the fouls at the line, putting the Cougars ahead by one. The Green Knights answered back with a three-pointer to regain the lead, 7-5. Assisted by Grace King (Fairland, Ind,), Jackson found the net with a three-pointer. Yonemura continued the momentum by finishing a jumper, giving the Cougars a 10-7 lead. After the Green Knights converted both foul attempts, Yonemura responded with another jumper. Both teams traded baskets resulting in a tie in the third minute, before the Green Knights surged ahead by eight points to end the quarter with a 25-17 lead. 


 
QUARTER TWO
 The Green Knights opened the second quarter with a 5-0 run extending their lead to 17 points. Yonemura ended the run by knocking down a three-pointer for the Cougars, making it 34-20. Continuing to add to their score, the Green Knights hit the net two more times before Yonemura converted all three of her free throw attempts. Both teams exchanged scoring, with Chammas hitting a three-pointer followed by Yonemura driving a layup, to cut the deficit by 16, 44-28. The Green Knights closed the quarter scoring five points before the quarter ended, heading into halftime with a 47-28 advantage. 


 
QUARTER THREE
Jackson came out strong in the third quarter, adding three points for the Cougars with a jumper and free throw. The Green Knights answered with back to back baskets, while Yonemura continued  to lead the Cougars offensively. She connected on a three-pointer, followed by a jumper and a layup on consecutive possessions, bringing the Cougars total to 38 points. Despite the effort, the Green Knights maintained control, leading 60-38 with five minutes remaining in the quarter. After a timeout, Lopez added two points for the Cougars, but the Green Knights closed the quarter with layups to extend their lead to 70-41. 


 
QUARTER FOUR
The Green Knights struck first in the final quarter with a three-pointer. Followed by King responding for the Cougars with a jumper and later assisted Nickerson on a layup. The Green Knight went on a 7-0 run before Nickerson drained a three-pointer for the Cougars to make the score 88-47. Maintaining their momentum, the Green Knights attacked the net with two more baskets with just over a minute left. Julia Conte (Norridge,Ill.) added a point at the free throw line for the Cougars, still trailing the Green Knights 92-48. The quarter ended with both teams exchanging free throws with hard efforts. The Green Knights dominated the Cougars by 43 points, with the final score of 93-50.
