River Forest, Ill. - The Concordia University Chicago (CUC) women's basketball team packed the stands in preparation to face off against the Muskies of Lakeland University. After an offense-heavy game, the Cougars took the game with a final score of 83-66.
Inside the Box Score:
- Ai Yonemura (Yachiyo, Chiba-Japan) showed out with 21 points, three rebounds and eight assists, along with teammate Naveya Jackson (Sun Prairie, Wis.), who also had 21 points, three rebounds and three steals.
- Grace King (Fairland, Ind.) left the game with 11 points, five rebounds, six assists and two steals.
- Hannah Lopez (Chicago, Ill.) walked away with nine points - all coming from 3-pointers - and four rebounds.
Here's What Happened
First Quarter
The Cougars started out the scoring for the quarter with a layup from Yonemura, followed up with a jumper from Jackson. The Muskies pushed back with a tip-in jumper. Lopez fired back with her first three of the afternoon, putting the Muskies in a five-point deficit. King delivered a jumper off of a Muskie turnover, 2-11. Lopez came in with another 3-pointer, showing off her offensive skills before a timeout. Lopez was 3-3 in 3-pointers as she had hit another shot from beyond the arc, leading to another Cougar three made by Abbi Dykstra (Yale, Mich.). Jackson got in a driving layup, 12-28. The Cougars went into the second quarter in the lead, 14-28.
Second Quarter
The Muskies saw the first points of the quarter with a layup. Jackson immediately reacted with a driving layup, breaking 30 for the Cougars. King drilled a 3-pointer off an opponent turnover, firing up the Cougars. The Muskies continued to trail by 20 points; Jackson delivered another driving layup, pushing past the Muskies. Jocelyn Chammas (Chicago, Ill.) had hit a beautiful 3-pointer, 21-44. Dykstra and Sophia Pedraza (Carol Stream, Ill.) handed out 3-point jumpers, the Muskies down by 29 points. The Muskies came in with some 3-pointers and a layup, trying to cut into the Cougar lead. Pedraza closed the first half with a jumper - the Cougars went into halftime as leaders, 31-52.
Third Quarter
Yonemura started off the quarter strong with a 3-pointer. King got in a jumper, adding to her now 11 points. Yonemura pulled up with another 3-pointer, quickly followed up by a layup from Jackson. The Muskies finally broke 40 with a layup, but still remained in a 22-point deficit. After nearly three minutes, Yonemura broke the Cougars' scoring drought with a layup. The Cougars kept their lead as they went into the fourth quarter, 43-66.
Fourth Quarter
The Muskies got the first points of the quarter with a driving layup, trying to eat into the Cougar lead. The Muskies were able to cut the scoring gap to 15 points before Linley Southern (Decatur, Ill.) had put up a layup, with Jackson coming in with a driving layup right after. The Cougars continued on with their 23-point advantage. With 1:34 remaining, Yonemura got in another two points off of a driving layup, breaking 80. Emma Nickerson (Lake City, Mich.) was the last to score for the Cougars with some free throws. The Muskies pulled out one last offensive move, but the Cougars took the game with a final score of 83-66.
