MSOE Defeats Cougars in Defensive Showdown

Milwaukee, Wis. - The Concordia University Chicago women's basketball team traveled to the Kern Center in Milwaukee, Wis. to face off against the Raiders of the Milwaukee School of Engineering. After a heavily defensive battle, the Raiders took the game with a final score of 83-66.
 
Inside the Box Score:
  • Ai Yonemura (Yachiyo, Chiba-Japan) led the game with 22 points, two rebounds and two assists.
  • Naveya Jackson (Sun Prairie, Wis.) followed up with 19 points, three rebounds and an assist.
  • Jocelyn Chammas (Chicago, Ill.) and Kira Holliday (Roselle, Ill.) both ended the game with seven points.
 
Here's What Happened:
First Quarter
The Raiders were the first to start the scoring off as a 3-pointer was landed. Grace King (Fairland, Ind.) got a bucket in to put the Cougars on the board. Yonemura got in a jumper of her own, gaining on the Raiders. The Raiders combated this with a layup; they broke 10 on a reverse layup, 10-4. The Raiders continued to stack onto their 10-point lead. Yonemura ended the Cougar drought with some free throws, along with a layup, putting up four points. King's free throws had put the Cougars within four. The Raiders landed some free throws, going into the second quarter on top, 16-10.




 
Second Quarter
The Raiders started off scoring once again with a 3-point jumper, quickly followed up with a layup from Yonemura. Another three from the Raiders gave them a 10-point lead. The Raiders took a hit at the Cougars again with another three, but Holliday came in with a jumper, trying to soften the blow. Linley Southern (Decatur, Ill.) got some points in from her free throws. Sophia Pedraza (Carol Stream, Ill.) and Chammas joined their teammates on the board with 3-pointers, fighting against the Raiders. The Raiders had hit 3-point jumpers, staying in the lead, 38-23. Holliday came in with a pullup jumper, but the Raiders broke 40 with a jumper of their own. The Raiders went into the half in the lead, 42-25.




 
Third Quarter
Yonemura started off the scoring with a beautiful 3-point jumper. Holliday was able to get in a nice three, helping the Cougars get past 30 points. The Raiders built on their lead with jumpers and layups, 50-31. Yonemura pulled up with another 3-pointer, getting her to 15 points. Chammas came in with her second 3-pointer of the game, followed up by a 3-pointer from Jackson. Jackson got in a layup and another three, lowering the point gap to 15, 60-45. 
 




Fourth Quarter
Jackson began the scoring with a jumper, which was countered by a Raider's layup. Jackson had hit another 3-point jumper, helping the Cougars break 50. King's free throws brought the Cougars deficit under 10, keeping them in the game. The Raiders' lead came back to 16 points, keeping the Cougars at a distance. Yonemura had hit a three, just beyond the arc, 74-61. Yonemura and Chammas gave out their free throws, but their efforts proved to not be enough. The Raiders took the game with a final score of 83-66.




 
What's Next
The team will travel to Chicago, Ill. on January 14th to battle against the Illinois Institute of Technology. The game will take place at the Keating Sports Center at 7:00 pm. Coverage for all things CUC women's basketball can be found at cucougars.com/coverage.
