Grizzlies Dominate Cougars in Season Opener

FRANKLIN, IND.- In the season opener, the Concordia University Chicago (CUC) Cougars women's basketball team faced the Franklin College Grizzlies. Despite giving their best efforts, the Cougars fell short against the Grizzlies, 85-26. 

INSIDE THE BOX

  • Grace King (Fairland, Ind.) led the Cougars with a total of ten points and 9 rebounds. 

  • With a four way tie, Kira Holliday (Roselle, Ill.), Hannah Lopez (Chicago, Ill.), Ai Yonemura (Yachiyo, Chiba-Japan) and Linley Southern (Decatur, Ill.) led with one assist.

  • Both Lopez and Yonemura tied with one block. 

 

HOW IT HAPPENED
FIRST QUARTER 

The Grizzlies scored first, but King quickly responded with a layup, tying the game at 2-2. The Grizzlies continued their momentum, scoring 11 consecutive points and putting the Cougars at an immediate disadvantage. With a three-pointer from Sophia Pedraza (Carol Stream, Ill.) trying to get the Cougars back in the quarter, the Grizzlies were able to maintain a large lead by 13. The first quarter concluded with the Cougars trailing the Grizzlies, 23-10.

 
 

SECOND QUARTER

As the second quarter began, the Cougars struggled with turnovers that led to the Grizzlies capitalizing on to extend their lead. Throughout the quarter, King, Holliday, and Yonemura managed to combine a total of five points for the Cougars. However the Grizzlies continued to dominate, increasing their score to 48 points and established a 33 point lead. The Grizzlies led going into halftime 48-15.
 

 

THIRD QUARTER 

Opening the second half, the Cougars continued to fight, with King sinking a couple of jump shots. Unable to stay strong defensively, the Cougars allowed the Grizzlies to build a 40-point lead midway through the quarter. The Cougars closed the quarter trailing significantly, 22-64. 


FOURTH QUARTER

With ten minutes to play, the Cougars faced a challenge to gain momentum and score points. Yonemura scored the first point for the Cougars in the fourth quarter with three minutes left, followed by Lopez adding another. With such a strong lead for the Grizzlies, the Cougars were unable to come back and fell short overall. The game concluded in a Grizzlies victory, 85-26.
