INSIDE THE BOX
- Nazuri Whigham (Naperville, Ill.) led the Cougars on the night with 12 points, eight rebounds, and one steal.
- Melia Perry (Oswego, Ill.) followed behind with ten points and two rebounds.
- Alisyn MacGregor (Loves Park, Ill.) led the defensive end with ten rebounds while also adding in four points, and one assist.
FIRST HALF
The Spartans kicked things off first with a quick jumper, but a MacGregor layup evened things up at two apiece. Exchanging offensive efforts, the Spartans found a deep three to jump out to a three point advantage before a layup from
Prentciss Gates (Gary, Ind.) would make it a one point game. A nine-point run from the Spartans would close the first quarter with a ten-point lead. A seven-point run from Perry would bring the score within three.
Following the smallest margin of the quarter, the Spartans would jump back out to a quick 11-point lead but a pair of free throws from Gates would cut that back to single digits. An 8-0 run from the Cougars to close the half would leave the Cougars trailing by six at the half.
SECOND HALF
The Cougars struck first in the second half with a quick layup from Whigham to cut the Cougar deficit down to four. Battling back-and-forth, a few Spartans' baskets would be combatted by baskets from
Cydnei Mitchell (Aurora, Ill.),
Jaylene Wade (Lansing, Ill.), and Gates to keep things at a four-point deficit.
With the Spartans starting to heat up, a three from Perry would keep things in a single-digit range.
A 12-0 run in favor of the Spartans would close the third quarter with the Cougars in a 20-point deficit. A jumper from Wade to start the fourth quarter would cut things back down to 18, but the Spartans would keep fighting back and keep their 20-point advantage. An 8-0 run would propel the Spartans ahead and make it difficult for the Cougars to overcome.
Unable to overcome the raging Spartan offense, the Cougars would fall 78-46. The Cougars will be back in action on Saturday as they head to Rockford to take on the Rockford Regents with a 1:00pm tip-off. Coverage can be found at cucougars.com/coverage.
