Door Slammed On Stars In Huge Cougar Victory

RIVER FOREST, ILL. — With the conference playoffs on the line, the Concordia University Chicago (CUC) men's basketball team traveled down the road for the Division Street Rivalry game against Dominican University. Both teams are battling for a playoff spot and the Cougars made a big name for themselves by winning this game 91-83.

Inside the Box Score:

  • Jordan Matthews (Chicago, Ill.) led the way offensively with 24 points, six assists, and four steals

  • Jacob Collicott (Lafayette, Ind.) had a huge night, picking up a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds

  • Another Cougar earning 20-plus points was Justin Greenlee (Brown Deer, Wis.) with 21 points

First Half

The Cougars would start off with a lead in the first half, courtesy of points from Greenlee and Collicott, 6-4. Matthews and Collicott would both pull in for layups, keeping the Cougar lead 10-4. William Bishop-Green (Chicago, Ill.) joined the action, pulling the CUC lead to 14-11. Dominican were not deterred from the CUC offense, and continued to be right behind them in the scoring category. But points from Matthews and Emanuel Wilson (Wheaton, Ill.) kept the lead ahead at 19-17.

Wilson drained a three, followed by layups from Matthews and Collicott, to start to pull away at 26-20. Collicott continued to have an impressive day, pulling into the paint and then shooting one beyond the arc 33-25.

Points were scored off of some drawn fouls, before Bishop-Green snagged some more points 40-29. Darrian Williams (Garland, Texas) would score some for himself to close out the half for the Cougars. They would lead 43-37 heading into halftime.

Second Half

Dominican started off hot in the second half, tying the game up at 43 apiece. However, the duo of Greenlee and Collicott would help to pull the Cougars out of that issue 48-43. As the Stars looked to chip away at the lead, Matthews had a good jumper and Brent Hatten (Olney, Ill.) sank a three to make it 53-45.

The scoring stayed consistent for the Cougars, as both Wilson and Greenlee made room for themselves 57-49. Then, two back-to-back steals would result in some momentum for the Cougars with points scored at 62-51.

Greenlee and Matthews were living beyond the arc all night, drilling some more three pointers 68-56. Matthews pulled up for a layup, and then Joel Watts (Homewood, Ill.) pick pocketed a Star to get himself some points 74-58.

Matthews continued his domination on the court, with Bishop-Green right behind him, pulling CUC ahead at 81-65. However, the Stars would not go quietly and started to chip away 81-73. However, the Cougars would draw some fouls and connect on their free throws to make it 90-78. Dominican would try to close the gap, but CUC slammed the door on them, taking the game 91-83.

The Cougars have a big weekend ahead of them, fighting for a playoff spot they host the Milwaukee School of Engineering on Saturday at 4:15 p.m. They will also be honoring their seniors with a Senior Day Celebration prior to the game.
