With the NACC playoffs rapidly approaching, the Concordia University Chicago women's basketball team (11-12, 9-7) traveled to De Pere, Wisconsin, to take on the top-ranked St. Norbert College (20-3, 11-0). After a tight first half, the Green Knights outscored the Cougars 40-18 in the last 20 minutes to secure the win, 75-46.
Inside the Box Score
-
Mikalah Ellis (Chicago, Ill.) led the way for CUC, putting up 19 points and 11 rebounds. Ellis now has a double-double in back-to-back games.
-
Alisyn MacGregor (Loves Park, Ill.) corralled 13 rebounds, making this her 14th game snagging 10+ boards.
First Quarter
After Concordia scored the first bucket of the game, St. Norbert quickly took the lead off a converted and-one play. The lead was short lived however, as Prentciss Gates (Gary, Ind.) responded with a make from beyond the arc.
SNC evened things up at five with a couple good free throws, but Melia Perry (Plainfield, Ill.) sank a three to give the lead back to CUC, 8-5. A 10-5 Cougar run, fueled by six points from Ellis, set the score at 18-10, Concordia's biggest lead of the first.
Three consecutive Green Knight buckets in the last 2:29 helped St. Norbert cut the deficit to one, 18-17, to end the first quarter.
Second Quarter
MacGregor's first three-pointer of the year increased the CUC lead to four, but seven straight points by SNC turned the tide and gave them a three point lead. Ellis hit a jumper to shrink the deficit to one.
The Cougars would come within one point again about 1:30 later after the Green Knights built a four point lead. An 8-2 run from St. Norbert quickly enlarged the lead once more, with a last second three-ball capping off the run. As the teams made their way to the locker rooms, SNC led Concordia 35-28.
Third Quarter
Four points out of the gate jacked the Green Knights's lead up to 11 before CUC was eventually able to get it back to single digits, 41-32. A four minute scoring drought then struck the Cougars while St. Norbert was able to put up another seven points.
Down 16, an Ellis three was quickly negated by a SNC three. A converted and-one from Ellis was the last score of the quarter, putting the score at 51-38 heading into the final 10 minutes of regulation.
Fourth Quarter
Concordia pulled within 10 after Jaylene Wade (Lansing, Ill.) sank a shot from threeland, but that did little to slow the Green Knights's onslaught. Of the next 22 points, 20 belonged to St. Norbert. By the time CUC was able to get back on the board, SNC controlled a 26 point lead, 71-45.
Chloe Schaafsma (Lockport, Ill.) tacked on a free throw with 12 seconds left, but the game ended with a 75-46 Green Knight victory.
