Cougars Secure First NACC Win Against The Scarlet Hawks

CHICAGO, ILL. --- Coming off of Thanksgiving break, The Concordia University Chicago Cougars (2-3, 1-1) traveled to take on the Scarlet Hawks of Illinois Institute of Technology (1-4, 0-1) for an Northern Athletic Collegiate Conference (NAAC) match up. In what was a battle on both offensive and defensive ends, the Cougars were able to walk away with the win.

Inside The Box
  • Jordan Matthews (Chicago, Ill.) led the offense with 14 points, The senior also had four rebounds, two assists and one steal.
  • Both Jacob Collicott (Lafayette, Ind.) and Emanuel Wilson (Wheaton, Ill.) followed with 12 points with eight and two rebounds respectively.
  • Sean Beckman (Hoffman Estates, Ill.) made his presence known today with 10 points and grabbing seven rebounds.

How It Happened

First Half


The game started off with a quick 6-0 lead by the Scarlet Hawks, but a three by Wilson and back-to-back buckets by Beckman ended their run. With defensive stops and another three by Wilson, the Cougars were able to build a four point lead with a score of 14-10. Which led to a Scarlet Hawk timeout.



Out of the timeout, the Cougars momentum didn't stop with a Matthews three, a Joel Watts (Homewood, Ill.) bucket and another Wilson bucket. This led to a 8-0 run. The Scarlet Hawks were not backing down and were able to slowly cut at the deficit, however, the Cougars were able to continue bringing the pressure on both sides of the floor.



Another Beckman three had the Scarlet Hawks stunned, but were able to respond with back-to-back and one baskets, which led to a Cougar timeout by head coach Rashaan Surles. Out the Cougar timeout came with a Matthews three and was able to end the first half lead up ten with a score of 37-27.



Second Half



A Collicott three got the Cougar offense going for the second half, but the Scarlet Hawks were able to quickly fire back with two quick buckets of their own. They were able to cut down the Cougar lead with now only trailing by six. This led to another Cougar timeout.



Coming out of the timeout, the Scarlet Hawks continued to make defensive stops, but it didn't phase the Cougars as William Bishop-Green (Chicago, Ill.) was able to hit a three, along with a Wilson fast break bucket. Justin Greenlee (Brown Deer, Wis.) was able to get in on the action with an easy two points to extend the lead out to 60-47.



The Scarlet Hawks bounced back with a three, but were quickly silenced with a Carter Langendorf (Aurora, Ill.) post up and Matthews three. After a heated contest from start to finish, the Cougars were able to secure their first NAAC win with a score of 75-60.



The Cougars will be back in action on Wednesday as they will host the visiting Greenville University in a non-conference matchup. Tip off will be a 7:00 pm start time. Come out to Geiseman decked out for White Out Night! Coverage can be found at cucougars.com/coverage.
