Cougars Close California Trip With Loss

REDLANDS, CALIF. – To round out their trip to the West Coast, the Concordia University Chicago women's basketball team took on the Bulldogs of University of Redlands, falling 89-48.

INSIDE THE BOX
  • Alexis Desjarlait (Red Lake, Minn.) led the Cougars in points with 13, her highest of the season.
  • Alisyn MacGregor (Loves Park, Ill.) picked up a team-high eight rebounds while also tallying eight points.
  • Amaya Martin (Issaquah, Wash.) and Linley Southern (Decatur, Ill.) each added valuable defensive minutes by securing four and three rebounds, respectively.
  • Four Cougars picked up their first points of the season as Martin, Emily Balaban (Manitowoc, Wis.), Janie Ternes (Oak Lawn, Ill.), and Kayla Jackson (Worth, Ill.) all added points.

FIRST HALF
The Cougars struck first as a jumper form Abby Kulig (Carol Stream, Ill.) put a 2-0 lead up on the board. Back-to-back buckets for the Bulldogs would force a quick jumper from Khaliah Reid (Naperville, Ill.) to pull up from inside the paint to level the score. With things once again going back-to-back a three from Desjarlait would level the score at 14 apiece with two minutes to play in the first quarter.

With the Bulldogs going on a 6-0 run to close the first quarter followed by an 11-0 run to start the second quarter, the Cougars fell behind by as much as 17 before a layup from MacGregor could break the Bulldogs' hot stretch.

The Cougars struggled to contain the Bulldogs for the remainder of the second quarter, falling behind by 21 points to close the half.

SECOND HALF
As the Cougars desperately needed to catch momentum coming out of the half, their first bucket wouldn't come until less than five minutes remaining in the third quarter. A drive into the paint from Cydnei Mitchell (Aurora, Ill.) would break the Cougars' dry spell and look to bring a glimmer of hope to the team.

With the Bulldogs taking control of the game, two buckets from Emma Nickerson (Lake City, Mich.), layups from Mirakle Anderson (El Paso, Texas) and Ternes paired with a pair of free throws from Balaban would round out the game for the Cougars, ultimately falling 89-48.

The Cougars head back East to take on Manchester University on Wednesday. Tipoff is set for 1:00pm EST. Coverage can be found at cucougars.com/coverage.
