Armstrong Named NACC Indoor T&F Athlete of the Year

River Forest, Ill. — The Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) released its 2022 Indoor Track and Field Athletes of the Year on Monday, with Kayla Armstrong of Concordia University Chicago taking home the honor on the women's side.

The senior stole the show at the NACC Championships last weekend, winning gold in the 200 and 400 meter races while also teaming up with Simone Wilson, Ali Wingood, and Angelina Nichols to win the 4X400 relay.

Each of these performances were of the record-breaking variety. Her time of 24.96 seconds in the 200m was best in the country at the time of the race and set a new facility record, NACC all-time record, and school record.

She broke her own NACC Championship record in the 400m with a time of 57.62, which ranks 11th in the nation. Her team's winning time of 4 minutes and 1.22 seconds in the 4X400 also set a new NACC Championship record.

After all the action concluded, Armstrong was named the Women's Track Athlete of the Meet. She followed that up by earning NACC Track and Field Athlete of the Week two days later.

Armstrong is no stranger to postseason honors. She has taken home the final honors of the season each of the last three years under the NACC's old format, where the Athlete of the Meet was awarded immediately following the conference championships.

The NACC Championships were not the only time this year Armstrong has posted elite performances in multiple events. She took first place in both the 60m and 4X400 relay just one week prior at the Margaret Bradley Invitational on Feb. 19. In her first meet of the season, The Windy City Rumble on Feb. 5, Armstrong won both the 200 and the 400m.

The Chicago native senior enters the postseason ranked No. 4 in the 200m, No. 11 in the 400, No. 27 in the 60, and No. 58 in the 4X400.

It's far from the end of the season for the senior. She'll head to Winston Salem, N.C., this weekend alongside three of her teammates to compete in the 2022 Indoor Track and Field National Championships.

With her top-20 rankings in the events, Armstrong qualifies for both the 200 and 400m races. She raced in those same two events last May at the Outdoor National Championships, placing third in both.

Following the Indoor National Championships, Armstrong will set her sights on more record-breaking performances this outdoor season.
