Cougars Struggle to Keep Up with Eagles

Lisle, Ill. -- In their first matchup of the season, the Concordia University Chicago women's basketball team fell to the Benedictine Eagles 84-44.

Inside the Box

  • Jaylene Wade (Lansing, Ill.) led the Cougars with 10 points and six rebounds.

  • Alisyn MacGregor (Loves Park, Ill.) grabbed eight rebounds and five points.

  • 20 Cougars played while 13 of them scored.

With an early bucket in the first quarter from Sarah Ludwig (Roselle, Ill.), the Cougars took the lead for the first and only time of the night. Despite intense defense they struggled to convert on offense. Unable to score on three consecutive possessions, it was a Bailey Steinkamp (Cary, Ill.) three that  broke the lid off the basket. While the Eagles were able to get everything to fall, the lid seemed to stay shut on the Cougars basket, ending the quarter 13-6. With the Eagles taking control in the second quarter, the Cougars quickly fell behind, unable to match on either end of the court.

Coming into the second half the Cougars defense intensified, and they were able to force seven turnovers while drawing enough fouls to collect eight points from the charity stripe. As the fourth quarter progressed, more Cougars made their way to the court with Kate Johnson (Lincoln, Neb.) grabbing four points, Janie Ternes (Oak Lawn, Ill.) adding two, and Josey Kahl (Forest Lake, Minn.) and Kelly Saleh (River Forest, Ill.) each adding a free throw.

Plagued by turnovers and missed layups, the Cougars couldn't catch the Eagles, falling 84-44, dropping the Cougars to 5-7 in conference while the Eagles improve to 10-3.

Another crucial NACC matchup brings the Cougars back home on Thursday to take on Lakeland University at 7pm inside Geiseman Gymnasium. Coverage for this game, and all things CUC Athletics, head over to cucougars.com/coverage
