Cougars Dull Stars in Division Street Rivalry Matchup

River Forest, Ill. -- On Tuesday evening, the Concordia University Chicago women's basketball team (6-5, 5-1 NACC) took down the enemy of Division Street Dominican University (1-10, 0-5 NACC) with a final score of 74-40. This win for the Cougars marks the best conference start for CUC women's basketball since the 1983-84 season.

Inside the Box

  • Mikalah Ellis (Chicago, Ill.) led the team with 15 points and seven rebounds.

  • Jaylene Wade (Lansing, Ill.)  followed behind with 9 points and seven rebounds.

  • Alisyn MacGregor (Loves Park, Ill.) led the team with 13 rebounds.

  • 12 different players scored on the night, while eight Cougars scored from the three point line.

The Cougars came out with intensity after back-to-back jumpers from Ellis put them up early. Ellis set the tempo for the Cougars and led the her team on both offense and defense. Getting stops on the defensive end, combined with unstoppable shooting, the Cougars went up 15-0 in the first quarter. A midrange jumper followed by a three at the buzzer from Ellis gave them the closing score of 20-1 after 10 minutes of play.

Continuing their run from the first quarter, the Cougars bumped up to a 18-0 run before the Stars were finally able to knock down a pair of threes to shake them up. Not backing down, Ava Gardner (Park Ridge, Ill.) drained a three for herself to close out the half.

With the Stars starting to fight back, the Cougars moved the ball quicker to create better shots. Frequent possessions where all five players touched the ball before taking a shot, helped them find more and more success from outside.

Hustle and heart from all 18 Cougars that stepped on the court helped lead this team to victory. They'll be back on Saturday where they head up North to take on Concordia-Wisconsin at 2:00 pm.
